He would feel like a rental to me.
Pretty much anybody Iowa St hires is likely a rental.

They do really good, bigger schools or thur nba come calling. They don't produce consistent success, the fans will run them out. The coach that lasts here, has consistent success getting to the tournament, but doesn't do so good every year that bigger opportunities don't come about.

It took Beilein 5 years to get Michigan rolling. He'd be 72 in 5 years. How many coaches are affective at that age?

How many 70+ year olds are making the NCAA tournament not named Coach K or Roy Williams?

Building a team today isn't the same as it was 15 years ago.

Bring him onto the staff. Defensive coordinator and help with in game management. Let Prohm recruit and run the offense.

(I understand that is basically impossible, but a guy can dream).

I wouldn't take him solely on the age factor alone. He coaches for 5 years, we attain a modest level of success, and then he retires leaving us with blue balls. Sound familiar?

Or he comes for 5 years, we attain a modest level of success which pulls us out of our current plummet to the depths of the Big 12, and maybe, just maybe, we don't blow the opportunity to hire a long term coach on the heels of success as bad as we did this time.

Whoa. Hold on. Beilein's teams at Michigan (and WV) were not exactly "noted" for defense - until he hired Luke Yaklich away from Illinois State to be his defensive guru. That changed everything for his final two years at Michigan.
He doesn't have Yaklich now at Clevelend...hmmmmm.

This guy is a genius and a even better person, would be an amazing fit and worth any buyout we'd have to pay. It didn't take him several years to turn UofM around. They were a train wreck when he took over, still dealing with NCAA sanctions, and he had them in the tourney(with a tourney win) in his 2nd year. As soon as he was hired by the Cavs I told my UofM friends he'd get fired after 2 years and then we'd bring him in, pipe dream I know, but gotta find some hope in something:
2007–08 Michigan 10–22 5–13 T–9th
2008–09 Michigan 21–14 9–9 T–7th NCAA Division I Round of 32
2009–10 Michigan 15–17 7–11 T–7th
2010–11 Michigan 21–14 9–9 T–4th NCAA Division I Round of 32
2011–12 Michigan 24–10 13–5 T–1st NCAA Division I Round of 64
2012–13 Michigan 31–8 12–6 T–4th NCAA Division I Runner-up
2013–14 Michigan 28–9 15–3 1st NCAA Division I Elite Eight
2014–15 Michigan 16–16 8–10 9th
2015–16 Michigan 23–13 10–8 8th NCAA Division I Round of 64
2016–17 Michigan 26–12 10–8 T–5th NCAA Division I Sweet 16
2017–18 Michigan 33–8 13–5 T–4th NCAA Division I Runner-up
2018–19 Michigan 30–7 15–5 3rd NCAA Division I Sweet 16
