Long John's Ames - Closed

I was an assistant manager at the LJS in Vallejo, CA back in the early 80s. I agree with the posters that say the quality of food and speed of service have gone downhill in recent years. I used to love the fish...but now they let it sog in the fryer until it's a greasy mess. I think part of the problem is that they tried to diversify too much. Each added menu item slows service. When all you serve is fish & fries, you can crank out a lunch/dinner rush pretty quickly. Multiple menu items cooked in different ways require that each meal be essential cooked after ordered. Might as well go to a sit-down restaurant for that.

I've had the fish & chips at whatever it's called on South Duff. Excellent flavor...but you still have to wait while they cook it.

That is why they invented beer, for when you are waiting.

I am not a huge LJS fan, but hate to see old institutions go away. Just one less option for reminiscing in Ames.

Sad day. Love me some LJS.

I'm with a lot of others though, I only ever get the chicken planks there, and have to get extra crumbs (I always called them crispies). I also can only eat there when I crave it as it's such a greasy mess, which is maybe twice a year.

How are students going to stay regular now?

There was a girl at my old job who used to announce to me whenever she was going to LJS or B-Bops for lunch, because both of those would end up with her in the bathroom for the rest of the afternoon. I was gone one day, and she had to ask another female coworker to go grab her some clean pants. :-/

Even forty years ago, we called it Long John Silver's Greasefood Shop. Still, got the craving for it every so often. Hmmm, wonder if that contributed to my quadruple bypass last year.

Did you get enough food for the price? That seems to be Iowans first concern with restaurants.

How was the tenderloin?
IT WAS AS BIG AS THE PLATE!!!

Burn in hell, Pizza Ranch
That's not just Iowans. It's funny how you ask someone how a place was and they tell you how much food they got, not whether it tasted any good.

Dead serious; Ames had a Long John Silver's?

I get the craving about twice a year. Eating there always leaves me with that greasy coating in my mouth for the rest of the day... and then some extreme thirst.

Don't ask me how I know IC doesn't have an LJS either, but that CR has 2. Okay, my sister in IC told me they didn't have one any more. And if they're in CR they will get their grease fix once in a while.

This is the first I have heard of this Mucky Duck. How is the beer selection? I will need to give it a holler next time I am in Ames.

Mucky Duck is quite good. Not a lot in the way of atmosphere, but the Fish and Chips are top notch, and they sell Scotch Eggs, tikka masala, and other standard British fare. A guy I work with drinks there regularly and swears by it as a bar.

I love the Mucky Duck. Stop there regularly to just grab a beer. And yes their food is awesome. Some days it smells horrible depending on what they are cooking but it always tastes good.

And yes not much of an atmosphere in there but I'm OK with that.

My dad suffered a minor heart attack within 24 hours of eating at a LJS. Crumbles nearly got him
