Jethro's BBQ Coming to Ames

Jethros does have good wings and sides I'll give them that but I still don't consider them a BBQ joint as their meats have little to no smoke flavor at all yet they still charge for them like they are top notch BBQ. Jethro's as far as I know doesn't even do any competition BBQ contests and if they did I doubt they would fair well if they were serving the stuff they have at their locations that seems to be getting worse in quality with the more locations they open up. If you follow what Smokey D's has been doing on the competition circuit they have been racking up national championships in many big time BBQ circuit competitions. We're pretty fortunate to have that kind of BBQ in the area that is just as good if not better than the BBQ you find in places known for BBQ like Kansas City or Memphis.

I'm sure they'll do decent business in Ames but I highly doubt BWW or HP are worried as both those places have their own market niche that I doubt Jethro's makes a dent in.

A few comments.

* The owners of Smokey D's started out by doing competitions....before they ever opened up a brick and mortar place. It is what they do. The owner of Jethro's started out by rehabbing a downtown building and eventually opening up Splash (seafood). He is a restaurateur, not a BBQ circuit competitor.

* I LOVE Smokey D's (may fav in DSM) , but because they kick ass in almost every competition they enter, that does that guarantee that all translates back to the staff making $9/hour in the kitchen serving hundreds of meals a day. Does it? My point: the competitions are an indicator of quality & potential, but does not a guarantee it all translate back 100% to the restaurant experience.

*Finally, this Ames Jethro's is going to be huge (size-wise). It only fails to not "make a dent" in BWW and/or HP if it fails and/or the volume of business in Ames doesn't increase enough to absorb this increased capacity.

I was going to say the same thing. Competition does not compare to having to do the pure volume they do on a daily basis. That place is always insanely busy.

I love Smokey D's as much as anyone, but I find that I enjoy things that I smoke at home a lot more, especially brisket. That may be because I'm particular to Texas style brisket, and the fact that you can take the time to cook it real slow and prepare it the way you like, not for the masses.

I was just out and about tonight getting supper and heard a conversation on this topic. One guy said if I was Hickory Park I'd be scared and almost laughed out loud. I don't care what eateries come into Ames, Hickory park will never be hurting for business. BBQ is just a small part of what HP serves food wise anyway.

BBQ is a very small part of both of their menus, neither business will be hurt by the other.

HP will never go down in Ames. I like HP and have never had bad food their or service. Its niche has been cemented.

Not familiar with Jethro's menu, but the way people carry on it sure made it seem like it was a major part.
It's how they originated, and it's the backbone of their menu, but each of their locations is themed, and they have certain items that are only available there. The Ames location sounds like it will have a steak and chop theme. Combine that with the breakfast menu, they're already showing that they are not looking to compete with HP. They're going to carve out their own niche, and if a few people who don't feel waiting in line at HP mosey on over, too? So be it.

Regarding breakfast, I would think that Perkins and VI are not too pleased about Jethro's coming to town. For the weekend brunch crowd, Jethro's does what they do and more, for roughly the same price, and it's a heck of a lot better food.

But my wife likes to deal with mine!!:):)

I do like another breakfast option. Do they do pretty much all kinds of breakfast items?

Yeah, those waffle fry nachos with pulled pork are unreal. Rest of their menu other than wings is hit and miss. I still like HP for the value, dessert and the food is good, but it's nice to have another good option. It's frustrating when you walk in to HP and there's a 40 minute wait.

Biggest sports bar in the Midwest? I'll take that. Gonna be tough on the Sports Page and OP.

I'm going to make a concerted effort to go to the OP. Prefer their taco pizza to anything I have ever had at Jethro's.

Lots of different things. Your standard fare as well as some things you can't get at most places in town, like breakfast quesadillas, pulled pork omelets, breakfast nachos, etc.
Plus, the portions are enormous.

I don't think it will be long before it establishes itself as the most popular breakfast place in town.

Amazing that I live about a mile from the Ankeny jethros and I've actually didn't realize they did a brunch. Looking at the menu makes it seem pretty good, but man, why does everything have to have cheese in it?
I'm sure you can order it without cheese.

This can't be serious. Have you actually had a decent amount of BBQ from either of those places? If you had I don't think that you could actually make that statement. Des Moines is definitely coming up, but let's not get the cart ahead of the horse.
