Jethro's BBQ Coming to Ames

On game days, we have tended to head to the El Azteca on Dayton just to get away from the crowds. Wish they would put more restaurants in west Ames for the same purpose.
Right, there's like 2 restaurants on the west side of Ames. Sportspage and West town pub

They have good breakfast and good wings imo. It will be nice to have another sports bar atmosphere with plenty of TVs. Hope they decorate in the right colors.

They'll be just fine in that location. They're in prime position for the weekday lunch crowd with plenty of parking to accommodate a 350 person capacity. There's good street access to that location, too, with a stoplight right nearby, and more access along 16th street. Pretty close to Hwy 30, too. I suspect they'll put up a big sign, so they can be seen from Duff. As others said, they're going to kill it on breakfast. Their breakfast offerings will be a welcome addition to Ames. And focusing on steaks and chops is a good angle, too.

Still better BBQ than HP. I realize that is a pretty low bar. I would never go to Jethros for BBQ.

Yes better, but you pay more too at Jethro's so kind of expected.

I rate HP BBQ considering the value for the money and for that, it is pretty good.

Does HP beat anyone head-to-head? Doubtful, but others all tend to be more expensive too.

16,000 sq ft is huge, he claims it will be the largest sports bar in the Midwest. Plus an attached banquet hall. Should be interesting battle between them and hickory park

They'll get enough business to pay the bills just because of their name and the need for more places like it in Ames but anyone who thinks they are going to hurt Hickory Park's business is living in a fantasy world. Everyone has their own opinions on what they consider good food but I would bet you if you polled people on whose food and service they like better HP would win that fairly easily. Plus you also have to factor in HP is a well established and well known icon in Ames which many people who went to ISU still love to come back and visit and that is something Jethro's will never be able to come close to matching even if they are in Ames for the next 50 years.

Yeah...I think when people are in the mood to go to HP, they will still go. I think what changes is that people (especially us out-of-towners) will possibly plan more meals in Ames for game day vs waiting until we get back to home. This is a win for the local economy.

HP is super cheap, so it has that going for it. And has good ice cream. They seem to have gone away from making a lot of their own stuff and just buying frozen. I used to love the fried chicken sandwiches, now they are pre bought.

West and north. There are no quick family places in north Ames when 1/2 of the family does not eat Mexican. I don't consider Wallaby's or the Cafe quick or family friendly as far as cost of feeding 6 people. There's are times when we would like to eat quick before/after school events in Gilbert. I know restaurants have not been successful up here, but we would use them occasionally. Does the new Super Walmart have McDonalds? I haven't been in there yet. Not even real fast food places up here besides Subway/Jimmy Johns.

Yep. A lot of times food sounds good but you go 'everything is going to be crazy busy'. Adding 350 more seats to the mix helps all with that.

Bless their hearts, my kids love Pizza Ranch because their sports teams stop at those all of the time, but east and 13th may not help you much. There is a little fast food that direction too. My kids also like Fazoli's, their quiz bowl team always stops there. They must like eating anywhere but home lol. Actually, they really hate when the coach wants to stop at McDonald's just because they will comp his meal, because they are always so starving and consider Pizza Ranch a better deal when you are really hungry than paying for a bunch of stuff at McDonald's. Our school bus broke down at a Pizza Ranch once and the kids all just went back inside and ate more until they could send another bus.

Some more details that some of you might be interested in:

The owner of Jethro's Barbecue has confirmed the restaurant chain is coming to Ames with plans to create the biggest sports bar in the Big 12 Conference.

Gerleman said the restaurant is still set have a 350-seat restaurant and sports bar, which he estimates could be the largest sports bar in the Big 12 region. He said the spot will also have 30 big-screen televisions equipped with 15 different satellite services that can display any NFL or NCAA Tournament game upon customer request.

He also is expecting to launch a shuttle service to bring tailgaters that park near the restaurant to and from campus on Cyclone gamedays.

The restaurant is also still set to have an adjacent banquet hall that can seat between 330 people for private events to over 500 people for gameday parties and more informal events, Gerleman said.

The restaurant is expected to hire about 200 employees and 12 full-time managers. Gerleman is aiming to open the location in July.

The tailgate shuttle is a nice idea. Hoping to open restaurant in July

Is that still the case? I love their breaded chicken sandwich for years then past two years I went and I was like what the eff did they do to this? It was so bad. But went twice on way to KC for Big 12s and on way home as well and got it and it was as good as it was two years ago.

Admittedly I've never tried it but as someone who works in Ames I'm happy to have another lunch option.

I like the idea of crowding in on HP, which I eat as there is little else for BBQ around here. Jethro's, while probably overrated, atleast won't be dried out and tough like HP often is... this doesn't go into what kind of management they have at HP, I've heard some pretty bad things about our beloved local legendary BBQ joint.

Sports Bar - should hurt WW. Though not much in Northern Lights area, cannot blame restaurants. But the Mexican there is awesome, and would like a Fongs pizza.
