Jethro's BBQ Coming to Ames

Should be great for handling gameday traffic.

"Hi. We're the city of Ames. We think we have a progressive planing department but in reality we have allowed every chain to pile onto one road with a terrible layout even though most residential growth is elsewhere in the city. Oh. What's that? Well of course you need 14 flood plain permits to apply for a building permit here. Go Ames water!"

Not a great move by the Des Moines Metro's most overrated BBQ establishment...

Totally agree it's overrated food but as a hotel and restaurant management alumnus, I respect them.

Service is good, place is always packed and they target the right markets. Location choice on this one is a bit peculiar but if they were going for size/seating they couldn't have done much better. Not many options for something this large in Campustown or Somerset area.

You nailed it on the service, that's the one area I've always given Jethro's props. The Drake location has always been pretty decent but I can't say that I've had good BBQ at any of the other locations.

Welcome to Ames, Jethro's. It shouldn't affect HP's business much. I see them as pretty different places and don't believe either will be hurting. As mentioned above, I'm happy to have another restaurant choice in town.

If anything, knowing that between the two there are something like 800 seats, you can go over to that part of town and know you can get into one or the other fairly quickly. Might be good for both in that way.

It'll be the best Jethro's location...until they open another one. This is a problem that has popped up every time they open a new spot. The food quality and service everywhere else nosedives. Clearly it's a successful business, but they have a bad habit of always focusing on the newest venture and letting things slide everywhere else.

On game days, we have tended to head to the El Azteca on Dayton just to get away from the crowds. Wish they would put more restaurants in west Ames for the same purpose.
