Where they love the governor
Happened in '01 and '02, at least on the floors I was on. Get your paperwork in early! And enough people drop out/don't show up/join a frat/etc that you get cleared out pretty quickly. Nothing like having floor meetings in the hallway, though...fun stuff.

Yeah, I was up there the same time as you, and it happened all the time - the difference being instead of ******** about it we just sucked it up. Everyone knew it would only take a week or two for people to start getting homesick and dropping out, so the "inconvenience" lasted really only that long.

Besides - who really ever uses the house den? In the three different houses in three different buildings I lived in (Friley, Helser, and Roberts), outside of the house meeting and a poker night every so often - rarely. Even a decade ago we all had our own TVs, and all of them were better than anything found in the house den.

When I lived in Birch (05-07) we had a ping pong table and pool table set up in there. They were used pretty frequently. Nobody uses them as TV rooms anymore, though I think there was one floor with a huge old tv that had been converted to a fish tank.

We would all lug the biggest TV on the floor to our den to watch stuff. Super Bowl, ISU away football games, big basketball games, the occasional NFL game when the Bears and Vikings were playing (most people were fans of one of those teams), stuff like that. The TV in the den was ****.

I heard 4 to 6, depending on the den from my buddy who works for the DOR...I (thank GOD) don't work there anymore, so I don't have all the details. They are going to set it up so the wardrobes act as kindof a wall between the lofs...which I believe are going to be bunked. Put shades over the windows and make switch the locks out so they all have their own keys.

It's happened in the past, and I don't know how full the greek houses are, but if they aren't all 'full' it will make a quick decision for someone stuck in a den to go greek, imo.

Well, I'm glad it's only temporary, as it sucks for the students who have to move... twice.

Our den had a Foosball table that got used about every night. Other than that it was usually just for house meetings.

If I recall correctly in the mid 70's they used Hilton.

Yep. Thought I had all of my paperwork turned in. When I found out that I didn't, my choices were off-campus or Hilton with I believe 300 other people. Chose off-campus but the people in Hilton were not there long.

This.

When I was in the dorms last year, the den was a great place to hang out and get together with the guys in our house. Order some Jeff's, and watch the game. It's a shame that will be pretty much taken away, that is unless the people living in the dens like having visitors frequently.

They'll be out of the dens in a couple weeks (most within 2 weeks).

The den's in Helser are way bigger than the rooms themselves. I would be happy about it, except for the fact that the walls are all glass haha.

They did this when I was in the dorms for the 01-02 and 02-03 school years. They pretty much count on kids dropping out, moving to apartments, moving to the greek system, etc. By the end of the semester I bet they will all be in a regular room.

They do this at Iowa, too. In fact, when my roommate from the fall dropped out at semester, my spring roommate was a Chinese kid who spent the entire first semester in temp housing (in a floor lounge) with like 10 other students. They pretty much all find a real home before too long (most of the time).

Here's the story.

The ISU DOR decided to accept more contracts than it has space for... and is putting students who signed up at the tail end of registration for on-campus housing in dens in residence halls.

For those who live on campus, I wouldn't be too happy. The den was a great place to hang out with a large number of people, watch an ISU away game on somebody's TV with some pizzas and WestCyde Wings, and just chill. You can still do that in somebody's room, but they're much smaller.

Thoughts?

I remember the few dens when I was in Friley. How many people can they fit into one of those!? seriously. A lot! Unless it's only like two people per den (it says 200 people with 116 dens afterall), then that's a potentially sweet deal for those two people. Not for everyone else who wants to use it for quiet/studying or playing ping pong or pool.

IT is a common practice for the dormies to be packed in like rats. Don't worry after the first week the weak ones will be weeded out and run back home to mommy's milk and that should open up room for those who are currently displaced.
