Is People's Bar Coming back to Ames?

As a recent graduate of Iowa State University, it has saddened me that my favorite bar is not around anymore down at Campus Town. People's to me was the best bar around, best FAC, live music and a great place to celebrate a Cyclone victory...and yes, defeat.

Heck, let's throw the second best bar into discussion too...Lumpy's. Quarter draws...oh man- That place rocked too!

Any inside info on the great old bar People's? The rumor I heard involved the Fire Station right next to Paddys- (They were possibly re-locating and the owner of People's was supposedly interested in purchasing the building?)

If you have info, post.... also if you would like to bring up some old times as well, it is very welcome on this thread

Go Cyclones!

I doubt it highly and even if it did, it would never be the same. My college experience revolved around Iowa State basketball and People's Bar and Grill. When People's closed my experience was officially over and the town of Ames will never be the same.

I'm surprised people could afford to drink at People's with the prices in there. I literally think I went there one time, paid too much for a beer, and went downstairs to Lumpy's.

Thursday Nights I could get a pitcher of Wiskey and Coke for $6.00, that is not too expensive

People's was fun most of the times I went. I didn't go there a lot and it was usually for Thursday's, FAC, and grad parties. But it will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the first bar I went to on my 21st. *tear*

My favorite FACs were when Swing Crew was playing. Good times. Best music was when Tony Bohnenkamp (Boner) of dueling pianos would be playing.... great times.

Also, I didn't think that People's was too expensive, mugs were cheap at FAC-

Man...the kids in college now are just missing out on a great bar at ISU.

Never really went to Peoples a whole lot. Spent more time at Dean's List and Mickeys, then off to Sips before last call...

Never really able to go to FAC, stupid practice...

I enjoyed Peoples but always found myself ending the night at Lumpy's after getting sick of waiting 20 minutes for a bartender.

the smart ones went down to Lumpy's on Trailer Trash Night to get your mason jars. No line, get right back up to KFM without waiting.

Buying the fire station building was the original plan, but that fell through quickly. Also heard rumors of if that happened, that block of Welch would be turned into a Ped Mall.

The new bar in town, Mothers Bar and Grill (Located where the Boheme was) is owned and run by the former manager of People's (From what I have been told, haven't been to ames to go there yet) and I'm told they have the same deals as People's (mason jars, etc)

Yeah, Hello Dave was good. My favorite band was Saved by Zero though...

Saved by Zero was awesome. Nothing like an 80's cover band! I liked The Nadas, Tina and the B-Sides and Sister Soliel. FAC with Boner rocked! Good times.

When they closed the place, the owner said he'd be coming back to Ames, but nothing has happened yet. As much money as the property owner has put into that place (and is losing), Zmolek may be able to get the space back. You never see very many people in there. I don't know of any other spaces that Peoples would want...unless they were to buy the old DL/Reign/Outlaws. I saw that was for sale.

That block NEEDS to be turned into a ped mall. It would be much better. The city just needs to find a new place for the fire station...possibly Somerset.

I kinda doubt the city will ever give up that fire station.

When I was there in the early 90's it was considered invaluable as a staging area for police during VEISHEA.

Time have changed, but the way the city officials and certain hiearchy of the Ames PD wizzed their pants every April back then, I find it unlikely.....

Speaking of times changing - I wonder if every spring they still practice tear gassing and storming the city warehouse out on Dayton. I don't know - apparently it was thought a crew of drunk students were going to take hostages and hole up in Beardshear or something. One of the scariest memories of my college years was seeing a handful of certain Ames PD members dressed up in riot gear with auto-weapons. :swoon:

All the talk about Peoples as the favorite, best, etc. bar reminds me of the age of those who say those things, and the age of people like me who were around long before Peoples and had different favorite/best bars.
To each (generation) his or her own.

Cave Inn! Only bar in history of Iowa State that was also the most popular cheer during football games. "all the way to the cave inn" was chanted anytime we had the ball headed towards the south endzone. (towards campus town.
