Take a look:
McCarney and Ferentz, similar patterns

-both had success with strong records and bowl games, followed by a series of .500 seasons

-both had their best recruiting years following their success, with levels of recruiting steadily going down after that

-both refused to change offensive coordinators who had boring and predictable offenses

-both coached under Hayden Fry

-both had around 40 Iowa players on their roster in their later years of coaching

-both saw a drop off in both size and speed of recruits after earlier success

-both had a top QB that led to their successful seasons, followed by QBs of average talent

-both had off field behavior problems, most prominate after their best years were over

I realize that KF had considerably more success, but in relative terms, they were not that far apart. But there are interesting similarities.

McCarney and Ferentz, similar patterns

-both had success with strong records and bowl games, followed by a series of .500 seasons. Mac had 1, maybe 2 seasons where he had this. Ferentz had his team finish in the top 10 three times in a row and playing in a BCS game.

-both had their best recruiting years following their success, with levels of recruiting steadily going down after that. Iowa had a decent class a year ago, but generally agree with this one.

-both refused to change offensive coordinators who had boring and predictable offenses.Barney wasn't terrible IMO because he didn't have great personell to work with. McFarland found that out this season and we continued to struggle. Cotton was definitely not a good coordinator, much like Ken O' at iowa.

-both coached under Hayden Fry. Yep, but most have had success who have.

-both had around 40 Iowa players on their roster in their later years of coachingThat number seems high but I'm too lazy to look

-both saw a drop off in both size and speed of recruits after earlier successYep

-both had a top QB that led to their successful seasons, followed by QBs of average talentBanks was average so Iowa never had a top QB. I don't think QB play has been our problem since the days of Flynn or Todd Doxzen. Debatable, though.

-both had off field behavior problems, most prominate after their best years were over.I don't think McCarney had anything nearly this bad going on compared to Iowa recently. 17 arrests in 1 season takes the cake. The Berryman thing sucked, but things happen.

Ferentz has a full cupboard coming back next year and the year after. I read where 31 freshmen and 15 sophs played for him this year. As much as I liked McCarney, he didn't leave much when he left. If after next season Iowa is looking back at another 6-6 season, then I think he'll be on a very hot seat. Similar to where McCarney was at the end of his run here.

I agree that Ferentz performed at a much higher level, just some interesting trends. Actually, rosterwise, Iowa has 40 Iowa players and Iowa State 39. Both are very surprising to me. Chizik is not going that direction. Some of the other stuff if a bit of a stetch, I agree. But interesting parallels.

I've been remarking about the similarities for the last year. I completely think Ferentz is following in Mac's footsteps and I think the fanbase is going to get tired of not getting where they want to be even though they will continue to be avg to slightly above avg and eventually show him the door.
