Open to discussion on this—despite Sama’s big touchdown run in Houston last night along with his perceived high pedigree coming into this season (don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a very talented athlete), my eye test so far this year tells me that Hansen is Iowa State’s best running back. He’s bigger, stronger, just as fast, and seems to be a more reliable solution especially in 3rd down/red zone situations. I like that they have 3-4 guys that they can use interchangeably, I just feel like given what we’ve seen so far, Hansen has more of that Breece Hall size and strength to explode through small gaps and pick up more yards than Sama would in the same situation.

When comparing this season’s stats side by side, Sama’s stats are heavily skewed with last night’s 75-or-so yard run. Not saying to not continue to utilize Sama in a significant amount of snaps, my argument is that maybe Hansen will prove more effective if he’s utilized in more snaps especially as the difficulty of defenses continues to ramp up.
