The women's 5000m indoors here in Ames Saturday will be the coolest track race I've seen in person since the Roma GP 1 mile in 1999. It's a stacked field where three Cyclone all-Americans -- Betsy Saina, Meaghan Nelson and Dani Stack -- will be racing to qualify for the ultra-competitive 5000m at March's NCAA indoor championships. It's free too. I had to pay 45,000 lire (about 20 bucks) for admission to Stadio Olimpico to see that mile. Rail fare was actually more expensive.
Two-time all-American Edward Kemboi is set to crack the 1:47 barrier in a loaded 800m field as well.

These are nothing like the high school or middle school clusters that you may be familiar with. These seeded meets are run with precision by veteran Drake Relays officials and are scheduled with expediency in mind. All of the athletes set to take the track or field Saturday are high level NCAA Division 1 elite athletes or the equivalent in lower divisions. You can't just show up here. You have to be fast.

Just from experience: some of the non-seeded races produce surprises. It's going to be a good meet all around. Lots of these athletes are gearing up for their conference meets and are just about peaking. In fact, some will be trying to make their own teams for their conference meets.

Two Cyclones set Iowa State school records on day three of the Iowa State Classic in the Lied Recreation Center Saturday. Betsy Saina smashed the 5,000-meter run school record with a time of 15:21.66. In doing so, the 2012 NCAA cross country champion eclipsed the world's fastest time in that event in 2013 by more than 22 seconds.

Congrats to Betsy! Great job by all the Cyclones this weekend.

Good luck in the Big 12 championships and NCAAs.

Alphine Tuilmuk (sp) ran here for two years before transfering to Wichita State (nursing program). She ran only 4 seconds behind Betsy.

Had she stayed, we likely have two NCAA XC trophy's (depending on if Dani redshirts) and the ability to do some damage indoors- but not win it.

It was fun to watch. She seems like she's expending little effort when she runs. The friendly rivalry she has with Alphine is fun to watch. Both of those girls are going to be superstars in Europe after college.
