The women's 5000m indoors here in Ames Saturday will be the coolest track race I've seen in person since the Roma GP 1 mile in 1999. It's a stacked field where three Cyclone all-Americans -- Betsy Saina, Meaghan Nelson and Dani Stack -- will be racing to qualify for the ultra-competitive 5000m at March's NCAA indoor championships. It's free too. I had to pay 45,000 lire (about 20 bucks) for admission to Stadio Olimpico to see that mile. Rail fare was actually more expensive.
Two-time all-American Edward Kemboi is set to crack the 1:47 barrier in a loaded 800m field as well.
Also, If you've never been to a meet at the Lied center, you're in for a treat. These are nothing like the high school or middle school clusters that you may be familiar with. These seeded meets are run with precision by veteran Drake Relays officials and are scheduled with expediency in mind. All of the athletes set to take the track or field Saturday are high level NCAA Division 1 elite athletes or the equivalent in lower divisions. You can't just show up here. You have to be fast.
