What's the best place in Iowa for kids to learn to ski? Yes, it must be in Iowa. No, I don't want to drive to MN or CO.

Since you're in Marshalltown, just head over to Boone. Plenty for kids just learning. Once they get their feet under them, head to some of the other midwest slopes.

Do you think it's better than Sleepy Hollow?

Yes. We drove to Boone over Sleepy Hollow even living in Des Moines. It has been a number of years since I was at either one since the first trip to a real mountain took both of them off my list.

Any place in Iowa is great to learn. Sundown is pretty decent for Iowa and is quite a bit larger than Boone, but Boone will be a lot closer.

Honestly, skiing in Iowa is fine if you're just looking for something different to do for a day. If you want real skiing, obviously head out to the Rockies.

Is there any place open on weekdays during the daytime?

I would guess probably not since a majority of their business is going to be the teenage crowd and school is in session. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yep, for closeness, Boone will easily be your best bet. If we are talking about the best ski resort in Iowa, it is easily Sundown, but that is mostly due to a lack of options. However, if you want to count right over the river in Illinois from Sundown, Chestnut is a little better and nicer than Sundown.

Seven Oaks in Boone is perfect for beginners.

It will bore anybody who has been to any ski resorts outside of the Midwest, but that should serve perfect for some greenhorns just trying to figure the activity out.

They have a tubing hill, too, in case skiing does not work out for them.

Boone. Sundown is better, but farther away. Also, if you go early in the morning to Boone and do the free lessons a lot of times you are the only one there so it is more 1 on 1.
