I'm looking at completing a garage makeover. It's just smaller than a 3 stall. Every time I need to fill th fridge with beer or meat, I have to move the car out of the way. Same goes with the garbage cans. Any of you completed a garage makeover, cost, contractor or DIY project.

DIY or not depends on scope of project, how handy you are, if you have the tools, and if you have good friends to help out.

And if you can afford the beer to have said friends help you out.

Do you have a place you can put the garbage cans outside? Earlier this summer I built a small paver patio on the side of my garage so I could put the trash cans outside. I was tired of them taking up space in the garage and stinking the entire place up.

Wall cabinets, floor cabinet and heavy duty shelving unit setups are pretty cheap at places like Menards. I have some of each of those in my garage and it really helped in getting organized.

I'm thinking about doing an epoxy finish on the floor as the next garage project. If anyone on here has done their own please post some pics and info about the brand you used. Plenty of pics on the internet but I want to hear some real world experience.

I could do it myself, The beer cold get expensive for my "friends". I'd need a good plan. I think I would have someone come out and develop the plan

This is a pretty loaded question. It really depends on how handy you are and how much stuff you have. Personally, there’s no way I’d ever have someone come in to do something like that. Only I know what I need to put where and how often I need to get to it. I also have a lot of tools and stuff that get used pretty often.

If you’re not handy, I wouldn’t recommend it. Nothing like something falling off the wall or shelves coming down onto a vehicle.

It’s an distaster right now because I have a bunch of projects going on but here’s the workbench area. I also have a bunch of stuff tucked away in other shelves.

Our Makeover, completed 6/2018, My wife and I did it ourselves with 1 other helper.
Salt damaged 40 year old floor,
1) epoxy patching cracks and pitted areas (Hired pro to do this)
2) Machine grinding entire floor (Hired pro to do this)
3) Multi layer," Armor Garage" epoxy, with military grade topcoat
(3 people doing this over several days, after watching lots of how to videos & it helps that my wife is a Professional painter)

I guess I'm at a different place. I'm handy enough to get myself in trouble and and plow through the process. I no longer change oil or any car maintenance due to the mess. I'll do little stuff but not crawling under cars.

Step 1 for me is to throw away or sell the things I no longer need. The see where I'm at. Main objective is unabated access to the beer and meat.

Where they love the governor
I really need to get mine in shape. It was kind of the holding area when we moved in 2 years ago and nothing really got put in a good spot. It's big enough that we basically just deal with it as a minor annoyance.

re. doing a garage makeover. Having a storage shed in the back yard is a great way to get some "stuff" out of the garage.
(I know some rules/ covenants don't allow for storage sheds)

Thinking a need to clean up the garage again. Gets out of control and maybe this thread will inspire me to declutter (again).

The one thing I am thankful for is leaving enough space between the outside wall (left drivers side) and my car door when doing my addition. Architect dude had it was too tight like you would never have anything against that wall or have garage cans etc. Made him change it. You should have a minimum of 30"-32" past the edge of your garage door and more is better.

I also helped a buddy put this up in his garage because he had taller ceilings. It would be good for that stuff you don’t need very often and gets a lot of stuff off the floor.

My fee is $5000. I will move your cars out to the driveway to make more room inside the garage to do other things. PM me for payment information details.

One note of caution concerning garage floors. I used Rustoleum's epoxyshield product several years ago. It looked nice and all, but when that sucker got a little water on it, it was like walking on an ice rink. After a rain or during the winter months, those slick spots were brutal.

I ended up picking up some diamond rubber flooring from Costco. It cleans up nicely, looks good and is textured to avoid a case of premature death. It's not the cheapest option out there (I think I ended up using two rolls @ $180-$190 at the time for my two cars garage), but it has held up nicely.
