Wondering if anyone has had any luck or experience with landscape companies providing a free design/layout of a project? I am looking to start a new project, but am hoping to get a layout or an expert opinion of the best layout before starting. Seems like a stretch, but my father in-law said that he had heard companies used to do this.

The person we worked with did the plan for free if you bought the plants through them.
As a landscape architect, I'll say, you get what you pay for. There are so many more variables that go into it - sun/shade conditions, soils, topography, cost estimation. I provide all my clients, image boards, conceptual boards, CAD drawings, elevations and anticipated costs for hardscape (edging, walls) and landscape.
I'm a state away or so so my guess is you don't want to work with the same people
I will say that the drawing we got was to scale and extremely detailed. When we first built, the person doing the hardscape had provided a "plan" and it wasn't much more than our house on graph paper with dots on it. I think I have those saved on my photos somewhere.....see if I can attach.
We got a recommendation through my work - coworker had used this person several years prior as had many of their neighbors. All very happy with and continued to work with them. Not sure if you are doing plants/hardscape but I would recommend local word of mouth. If you drive by someone's house and like how it looks, ask them!
