Football Season Tickets - Buying / Selling Strategies?

I'm considering getting 2 or 3 sets of season tickets (maybe more?) with the intent being to keep a 1-2 games per year to attend w/ my kids and selling off the rest (as long as I can break even I'm happy; it will also help me meet some credit card bonuses). I'd like to hear input from others who have done or do this sort of thing.

- What level do I need to go to? (probably the blue or green would be my top ability - see picture) for there to be a market?
- Which games bring in the best resale?
- Can you truly break even (or better) doing this?
- How hard is it to sell tickets on the resale market for 4 or so games per season?
- Any unseen drawbacks?

Thanks!

I'd think covering the cost of the tickets would be pretty easy. The per game cost for season tickets is cheaper than face value for single game tickets, so you could sell at a "discount" while still covering your costs. Getting enough to also cover the donation might be harder. Iowans are cheap. It would help if you also had a parking pass to sell.

When pricing tickets, know what the individual ticket cost is. Don’t assume.

If you use a third party (Ticketmaster, Stubhub etc) you will receive a 1099 form.

The Cyclone Club donation deadline for priority seats and parking was March 3. Don’t know how that will affect your choices

Fortunately the season ticket people by us make sure they only sell to Cyclone fans. But our old seats, people would always sell them to Pantherhawks and Hawkeyes. I understand not wanting to go to CyHawk, but give the people you sit by for five or six games a freaking break.

Worried this might happen to us this year again, as last CyHawk, a bunch of Hawks came up to the top of the stadium and were bullying the then ten year old who sits by us. Afraid his dad will bail on the game this year.

- Which games bring in the best resale? Iowa and UNI.
- Can you truly break even (or better) doing this? Unlikely.
- How hard is it to sell tickets on the resale market for 4 or so games per season? Resale ease is directly related to team W/L record.
- Any unseen drawbacks? You would probably make more money betting.

The hell? Ticket master sends out 1099s? That company bends their customers over every way they can. Is this on tickets over face value or any sold?

I'm mobile passing this yr and will probably sell off Iowa that whole day just sort of sucks. Crowded, hot, etc.

I say this now but will probably still go.

New IRS requirement for 2023 for amounts over $600. My understanding is that it is the amount paid to seller. eBay sellers will also be receiving 1099’s

There is lots of discussion on boards if this makes you a business. If a business, there will be self employed taxes too

Will be a mess

So in theory can you turn this into a loss if you take the total account of the tickets into account (ticket +donation) @isufbcurt @CloneLawman

My only advice is to give at the level that will let you buy a decent parking pass. If I do not attend a game, I find that the parking pass will almost always return good money, even if I sell the tickets at face value.

I live out of state 9 hours away. I have had season tickets the last 4 years. I make it to 3-4 home games each year. I have always attended the first game of the year and the Iowa game when at Jack Trice. Most years I break even on the other games. Last year it was hard to sell my tickets for half price after we start losing.

I find it funny that people on this forum are surprised and offended by the new 1099 requirements. Reap what you see.
