It's not the fact that CPR doesn't deserve a few down seasons, but the fact that these teams aren't even competetive is alarming to some. It's not that this team is just young and inexperienced, they don't appear to be near the athletes as the teams we are playing. The coaching staff under CPR seems to be in shambles. The football marketing propaganda machine has made this program way better than the actual product on the field. This is all to familiar to some.

For me, the most frustrating part is that the team was showing signs of improvement through the Tech game and then the injuries just took their toll.

I look back at the Texas and TT games and know that both were winnable. For Tech, their WRs are terrific and made Webb look even better than the ISU defense did. For Texas, there were the 3 bad plays: Bundrage drops a 3rd down pass inside the UT 15 resulting in a FG; the OC decides to run ISU's smallest back into the middle of the line on 2nd & 1 at the UT 3 yd line resulting in a 1 yd loss and, ultimately, another FG; and last, but certainly not least, the hail mary.

Said at Iowa State you can't expect 9 wins a year, but then went on to say we need to compare ourselves to teams like Kansas State or Wisconson which makes no sense since both expect 10 win seasons. I about fell out of my chair. When I played football we expected to win every game are the Iowa State players not to expect a win every game? If not, what exactly are they playing for.

That's not what he said. Pollard basically said it wasn't reasonable to expect 9 wins every year at iowa state....which is probably true. even teams who win 9 games a year, don't do it every year. We've done it once in 100+ years of playing football. As much as we hate the dbags to the east, they've had some successful, 9+ win seasons and we all can see where they've been the last several years.

The comparison to other programs that are doing it now was being used to show how you don't want to be too quick to pull the plug. noted Frank Beamer at VT, was like 2-8-1 in year 7 and people wanted him canned. year 8 won 9 games. Noted people wanted Pinkle fired at mizzou after year 4....etc.

That's basically what I said, his comment about 9 wins per season was pretty much in the context I put it in. The interview was replayed on TNT yesterday and is in their hr 2 podcast. It was a message that came off pretty brash.

Not really. You said that you can't expect 9 wins a year....he said can't expect 9 wins EVERY year....and you probably can't in the current structure of the big 12. He was using the MODEL of teams like VT, Wisconsin and K-state for how they got where they are. yeah, they might expect to win 9 every year now...but i'm sure k-state couldn't have imagined anything close to that in 1989. heck, k-state is probably one of the few teams that we hold an all-time football win advantage over....and that's saying something. You've allowed TNT and Miller and Brinson to paint the statement in a way to get you riled up.

That is pretty disturbing about what Pollard said. As I mentioned before, context matters. It is one thing to have a season like this if you just finished a 9-3 season, but when you put something like this out there from a coach coming off of 3 straight losing seasons and has never finished higher than 8th place in the conference or won more than 6 games in a year, it is a concern. And I hate to say this, but we have no standing to be criticizing the dbags to the east right now. They will likely be going to their 11th bowl in 13 seasons under Ferentz, and I cannot think of any rational person who would prefer what we have experienced during that time frame.

And I hate it when we compare Rhoads to other coaches. One is because each program has unique circumstances, but I especially hate it when he is compared to people like Beamer and Pinkel who were late bloomers. Those guys are exceptions. For every Beamer and Pinkel out there, there are 10 guys who failed miserably. And for every Beamer and Pinkel there is a Barry Alvarez or Mike Bellotti or Bobby Bowden or Mike Gundy who was able to achieve regular winning seasons within a few years and sustain it. Mike Gundy got Oklahoma State to 9 wins in his 4th year, and now their version of a "down season" is an 8-5 finish and absolutely destroying a Big Ten school in a bowl game. Even Bill Snyder, who many people here seem to be fond of comparing Rhoads to for some reason, took Kansas State of all places to 9 wins in his 5th year and did not have another losing season until 12 years later (finishing with at least 9 wins in 10 of those 12 seasons).

I hate negativity, but I also dislike the kook-aid drinkers who are oblivious to reality and I especially dislike all of the apologists. I am sick of excuses and this "but we are Iowa State" mentality. I am not ringing the death knell for Rhoads this year, but this offseason will be pivotal for him. How he responds to this colossal failure of a season will define him as a coach, dictate the direction of our program for the next 5-10 years, and determine if the is "the one". If he bounces back with a season better than his first 5, I will have hope that he has had enough and is ready to start kicking *** instead of making excuses. If he rebounds with yet another sub-.500 finish, I will have next to no faith that he is the right guy to get it done.

**** it...Fire everybody!

Pollard's statement was supposed to be one of support for a coach who is having a ****** year. Given the hope that CPR has at least given everyone in 4 of 5 years, i think he deserves at least one mulligan.

Keep in mind you are arguing with someone that almost fell out of a chair.

I do appreciate your efforts. It is, however, a constant battle whether to allow these types of comments to go unchallenged, or to never argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I really, really, REALLY, hope that for one second, you didn't let the boys on TNT frame any opinion that you may or may not have had.

Carry on.

He said you can't expect 9 wins every year... NOT A YEAR. Big difference. And saying it your way makes it sound like we never should expect it. Saying every year, implies we will have down years.

Don't let a true quote get in your way on this though....

We could join the MAC, too.

Or, we could just stop making excuses and start beating more teams in the Big 12.

OK You have convinced me, FIRE EVERYBODY!!! Hire this guy, national championship here we come...Whoo hoo!!!

Way to pull out the "i played high school football" card Al Bundy.

You don't think these coaches prepare to win every week? Actually, YOU probably don't.

These "if we stop making excuses we'll start winning posts" are getting a little silly. Some of you have jumped the shark.

They are often playing to lose by less I think, based on some of the in game decisions I've seen.

Oh no Chris I cant stand these two, I take what they say with a grain of salt. I just laugh when they are calling for Rhoads to be fired.
