Eustachy to Oregon State?

You must be NUTS. Name me any other coach that has won the conference basketball regular season title at Iowa State.
We've have had many great basketball players here, but only LE put them together and won the title. Not only did he win the title, but did it back to back. He had some problems off the court, but he was far and away the best coach we've had, and I doubt we'll have another that good.

Here were the conference records he compiled at ISU:

98-99 6-10
99-00 14-2
00-01 13-3
01-02 4-12
02-03 5-11

That's an overall Big 12 record of 41-38 which is pretty damn mediocre. Yes, he won two conference titles, basically because of one player. He never showed any evidence that he was going to be able to continue that success at ISU, and he has never repeated that success at Southern Mississippi. In his career - 17 years as a head coach - he's had 3 NCAA tournament appearances. That's a worse record than Steve Alford.

You are the one who is nuts if you see anything in Larry's overall record that indicates he is even an above average coach, let alone the best coach we've ever had.

I've always thought Floyd was the best coach we've had here and would have done what Larry did and more if he had stayed. But I'll always be grateful to Larry for the two conference titles and elite 8 appearance, we haven't had any other coach come close. I like Greg but I'm in a wait and see mode to see if he can cut it in the Big 12.

Ah yes, I remember those last two Eustachy years...sitting in Hilton...getting absolutely BOMBED at home by such basketball powerhouses as Texas Tech...watching any Hilton magic from the previous years disappear...dead, dispirited crowd, so you could hear LE's filthy language toward the refs from sections away...

For me it's pretty easy.

Floyd, Eustachy and McDermott (From what I saw with UNI and currently at ISU) = Structure and Discipline. I felt I actually learned something from the post game interviews with these coaches.

Morgan = the total opposite, no structure. Fun basketball sometimes, but no structure. I also learned absolutely nothing listening to him talk. Man was that dreadful.

Walters "Coach, what do you feel you need to do to beat these guys next time?"

Morgan... The game is about runs, we just need to have more than them. Oh and make more baskets

I think Wayne Morgan was better than Larry, Tim or Johnny - combined.

Wait, this genius. No one has ever thought of a thread comparing our previous coaches. This is a great idea. Let's debate who is better.

Here is the thing....

Tim Floyd- Great Recruiter and Coach
Larry Eustachy - Great Coach
Wayne Morgan - Great Recruiter
Greg McDermott- Great Coach and Recruiter

I am a Larry fan and loved to go to games while he coaching. He had some bad judgment and lost his job. I think he would be a great fit at OSU and they would love to have him.

But we have McDermott and I think he is GREAT. He plays basketball how it is meant to be played. Not like the up and down game in the NBA or what they play at Memphis. We are in a transition period and I beleive we will return to our winning ways with McDermott.

I have confidence in Greg but am grateful to Larry for the two championships he helped bring us.

But I'll always wonder just how much LE's drinking problem contributed to the decline in both recruiting and level of play his last two years.

Or we could sit back and waste everyones time with stupid sarcastic posts. I thought this board was to discuss past, current, and future topics in regards to iowa state. Oh yea, and I think message boards can have some personal opinions as well.

Larry was a complete ***hole, but he knew how to coach a team. I would defiently have taken him back over Morgan anyday, and the fact that he got fired was just stupid. Bruce Van De Velde should have went with him when he did fire him, because he was the WORST AD ever. (Besides Iowa's old AD).

But we have McD now so really, who cares? Besides...it could be worst, we could have hired Kevin Sampson. (Laughing at Indiana)

Getting back to the topic at hand.....the PAC-10 is certainly much better overall than Conference USA, but Oregon State is just a godawful job and has been for a while. For crying out loud, the San Diego coach from the West Coast Conference turned them down. Not that Southern Miss is much better, but LE would be starting from square one up in Corvallis. That being said, he is originally from the West Coast, and maybe he would enjoy getting to coach against TF twice a season. I'm pretty sure those two are still good buddies.

I was trying to wade thru these threads before I wrote my opinion on this subject but yours totally sums up my feelings completely.

That is exactly what this board is for. But, anymore, it seems that I could start a thread titled "What I had for dinner" and it would get threadjacked into a coach comparison thread. It is old. It is tired. If the name of this thread was "Comparison of past coaches", I wouldn't read it. But that wasn't the title, was it?

Oh, and one more thing. At least get to 25 posts before you start telling me how to post on this board. I've made it this long without your help.

When it comes to p.r. I'll admit Greg has it all over Morgan, but what do you want, good interviews or good results on the court? I get a kick how some people think Greg is a much better coach than Morgan even though Morgan was 2-1 against Greg's best 3 UNI teams, and accomplished much more in his first year than Greg has in his first two. Sure I've heard all the excuses over and over again, but the records and accomplishments tell the tale. Until Greg does anything close to what Morgan did at ISU, it just doesn't make any sense to keep putting down Morgan and praising Greg as some continue to do.

Read the article in today's Register about Taggart, how he was leaving even before Morgan got ran, because there WAS NO DISCIPLINE. Morgan was taking the program nowhere fast

It would be interesting if LE was in a BCS conference again, but I also don't think Conference USA is horrible, although it was better a few years back with DePaul, Louisville, and Cincinnati.

Consider these two college head coaches:

Coach #1:13 years, 254-163 record (.609), 4 NCAA appearances (31%), 4 NIT appearances (31%), Makes postseason play 62% of the time.

Coach #2: 17 years, 320-208 record (.606), 3 NCAA appearances (18%), 2 NIT appearances (11%), Makes postseason play 29% of the time.

Which coach is better?

Are they both "great coaches"???

I just hope we get back to seeing the NCAAs regularly. I was spoiled when I was in school with the Floyd years, and then the Tinsley years soon after I got out.
