ESPN Article Questioning ISU's CFP

I'd be with you, but if we were beaten by 3+ scores the conversation nationally would just be how undeserving we were and that we were a "fake ID," as Cowherd would say. If we were a big brand it wouldn't be a big deal, but the media would murder Iowa State for that.

A good showing in a NY6 bowl would be propellant for good conversation about us for the next eight months.
Matt Campbell has been successful at Iowa State because he refuses to live in fear and he has instilled that in his teams. Not wanting a CFP berth because you might get embarrassed is the very definition of living in fear.

Just a warning, if Georgia pounds Missouri today (14-0 already), I wouldn't be surprised to see them jump ahead of idle ISU. Then ESPN will be arguing that Georgia doesn't deserve it. ;)

Yes. And I got marked “Dumb” half a dozen times for saying so. Expanding the Playoff solves nothing.

Check the NCAA basketball playoff history for examples. Plus, college football has complications and implications for player health and safety that college basketball doesn’t.

I think that it solves a lot. Gives more teams a shot and allows G5 to actually play for a title. But I do agree with the player health issues

where is the deep dive on tosu resume? It’s a joke that they are top 10. Should not be under consideration. assuming they win out. .. best wins will be Indiana a team with 0 wins vs teams with a winning record and NW.... a team that lost to Mich St. No proof that tosu is any good this year. Also, the fact that they only play 6 games gives them an advantage over teams that have had to play 9, 10, or 11games. Going into the playoff teams they are completing with will have had the wear and tear of 4 or 5 more games. OSU gave up on the Illinois game not because of the conference rules on COVID but because players had to miss some practice and a few guys were going to be out. Meanwhile, Clemson went on the road and played a top 5 ND team without their starting QB. Resumes are not close to comparable. 2 loss clemson is one of at least 10 teams that should go before any b10 team is considered.

The media doesn't care about OSU's resume. They've been given the benefit of the doubt based on brand name.

Georgia is in the SEC. they would be arguing why Georgia SHOULD be in it.

I could see a scenerio were there are 3 teams from the SEC, and not one of them would be Georgia. Just for fun here is how that scenario would pan out:

1. ND beats Clemson giving the Tigers two loses.
2. Ohio State loses in the Big 10 Championship
3. Florida beats Alabama in the SEC championship
4. Texas A&M wins out

If the above scenario happens then Alabama, Florida, and Texas A&M each have one lose to each other but beat the other team. Alabama beat Texas A&M, Flordia beat Alabama, and Texas A&M beat Florida. I think it's unlikely but not out of the realm of possibility.

Be careful, you’re going to make espn talking heads cream their pants with talk like that.

Screw 'em. Let's beat OU and then beat either Florida or Georgia. Let's show 'em like we did last year.

Florida is losing right now. If they lose, Texas A&M goes to the champ game, correct? If so, they presumably lose to Bama. Iowa State wins next Saturday, could see them being 5th at the worst. Then comes back to whether Ohio State is undefeated or not.

I think Alabama - Florida is already determined. Florida is East champ, win or lose.

I just want what's best for the program. We need to get to the next level before we want a piece of Nick Saban's NFL team. Last year's Camping World Bowl was getting a top 10 caliber opponent one year too early. Bama will play in the title game, and we're not close enough to that level. I'd rather have a game we can actually build upon.

I'm not saying we'd end up like Michigan State, they're very different situations. But MSU clearly wasn't able to build on their playoff berth, and ISU would get far worse treatment in the media than MSU did.

Campbell doesn't throw freshmen into the fire too early. I feel the same about the program. We've got a chance to leverage this season into recruiting at higher level, and getting manhandled by Bama would set that back.

Obviously if you get a playoff invite, you take it. I'd rather get in through the front door, though.

I'd say we recovered from that drubbing quite well.

understand, just so different this year. So many reasons why they shouldn’t just put a team in on brand name. How many people had LSU over Florida? Have to play the games... 6 games is not enough data points to judge a team.

Fixed for accuracy.

Instead of lobbying the b10 for an exception to the rules they set up, OSU should have been lobbying the b10 to allow them to play replacement games... instead of iowa vs. wisconsin, should have had osu vs. iowa to get another data point (like BYU and Coastal Carolina did). Wisc v. toe has no impact on b10 title or playoff... they should also play a noncon v cinci... point is, they should be outside the top 10 (like usc) and be doing everything they can to be proving they belong. instead they are letting everyone else play games and saying.... look at us... we didn't play but we are still undefeated.

It also wasn't watched by 10M people to damage our reputation.

Back in 2015 when 10M people watched Alabama roll over Michigan St 38-0, it didn't damage MSU's reputation - people generally recognized that Alabama was just on another plane of existence. Losing to someone superior to you doesn't damage your reputation; it just means you lost to someone superior to you.
