ESPN Article Questioning ISU's CFP

If there is a team that should be vocal about their #10 playoff ranking it should be the Miami Hurricanes. They have a huge game against North Carolina tomorrow and if they win, will be 9-1 with their only loss 42-17 against Clemson.

How the committee can rank A&M 5th and Miami 10th is beyond me. A&M lost 52-24 to Bama. My assumption is the committee is giving A&M a big push because the beat Florida.

Based on my eye test, Miami is a top 5-6 team.

Well, considering I have a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Iowa State and spent two semesters writing for the Iowa State Daily (I don't know if that helps or hurts my argument) and interned at a TV station for my first 6 months out of college, I would say I have a pretty good idea of what a journalist should or should not be doing.

And for the record, usually when a reporter reaches out to a party that refuses to respond, they usually state that "they reached out to 'so and so' who is from 'so and so' and they refused to respond".

Aclone mentioned this above, too (and I referenced in post #54. :) )

SolarGarlic's general statement that there probably aren't a lot of journalists on the board is probably correct.

Expanding the Playoff solves nothing.

Check the NCAA basketball playoff history for examples.

Like USC going 24-2 and being ranked #5 in 1971, and not making the tournament because only one team per conference was allowed in (which was always UCLA in that era). Four years later, the bracket was expanded to 32 and the rules were changed to allow for conferences to have a second qualifier (but no more than two).

Just one year after that (1976), the championship game was Michigan/Indiana -- something that would not have been possible as late as 1974, because Michigan wouldn't have been allowed in (at 21-6, 14-4).

That this on tweeter. This would be awesome and would love to see the CFP go to this.

This year having 16 would be interesting be of the lack of non-conference and vastly different schedules but I think a normal year 8 makes sense with auto bids for p5 champs, highest G5, and then wild card spots for final two.

ESPN, and their lousy articles that use useless and dumb metrics, can s my d. They’re a bunch of clowns that are clearly jealous of us and what we’ve accomplished as a team this year. They have to be fuming over the fact that we are not a blue blood and stand a legit shot to make the playoff.

It really isn't worth getting broken up about the outside perception of whether this team deserves the playoffs. At this point the top 6 teams are the only ones with a realistic shots getting in. The committee won't put in a two loss team, they won't put in the top G5, and they won't consider the Pac-12 this year.

And that is fine with me. I've said it in other threads: I don't want Iowa State to be in the playoff if it just means they are fodder for Bama. I want to revel in this historic season. Win the Big 12 and go to the Cotton Bowl for the first time ever. Beat either Florida or A&M, and put a bow on a the year.

Ah, just like the press thought little ISU would be fodder for Texas, and it would be another Red River Shoot out in the CCG.

Remember when Ohio State lost week 1 at home to an unranked Virginia Tech and no one was supportive of them being considered for the playoffs (yes, baylor and tcu both got screwed), but a lot of people dismissed them for having an unranked loss. Or considering the fact that ISU and Oklahoma both have 2 losses and we're the higher ranked team, I feel the CFB Committee has been incredibly fair to Iowa State.

It had more to do with a one loss team whose only loss was to a top 5 team on the road by a late FG being more deserving.

Texas hadn't done anything to deserve that sort of prediction. Alabama on the other hand has earned their #1 ranking, and I believe they would probably beat us by 2+ scores.

I doubt CMC or our players give two ***** about what the talkings heads at ESPN think. The CFP committee loves us- we have a shot, and there’s nothing ESPN can do about it other than whine.

The easiest way to solve this: keep winning and then do it again next year. Winning shuts up the haters.
Sock it to ‘em Cyclones!

I don't get the people who don't want a CFP berth. There are a lot of teams that would likely get boat raced by 'Bama. That doesn't mean that the teams, administration and fan bases aren't hoping, praying and advocating for their squad to make the cut. You are one of the 4 best teams in the country for a couple of weeks at least. No one remembers who even the NY6 bowl teams were just a few years down the road. But every football fan remember who those 4 playoff teams were.

If we go to a 16 team playoff...I want to be the first to officially speak for the team ranked #17: "We were screwed!!!! We were robbed!!! We could have won it all, damn Omaha and Northern Virginia elite, effete media girly men voted against us!! I want a recount!!!!"

I'm not sure what makes us the bigger target: having 2 losses, not being a blue blood or not in the B1G/SEC.

D.)All of the above. Seriously, can’t have a non blue blood doing that well. Only an occasional G5 that the media can pat on the head.

No shocker that ESPN is not supportive of ISU.

where is the deep dive on tosu resume? It’s a joke that they are top 10. Should not be under consideration. assuming they win out. .. best wins will be Indiana a team with 0 wins vs teams with a winning record and NW.... a team that lost to Mich St. No proof that tosu is any good this year. Also, the fact that they only play 6 games gives them an advantage over teams that have had to play 9, 10, or 11games. Going into the playoff teams they are completing with will have had the wear and tear of 4 or 5 more games. OSU gave up on the Illinois game not because of the conference rules on COVID but because players had to miss some practice and a few guys were going to be out. Meanwhile, Clemson went on the road and played a top 5 ND team without their starting QB. Resumes are not close to comparable. 2 loss clemson is one of at least 10 teams that should go before any b10 team is considered.

I'd be with you, but if we were beaten by 3+ scores the conversation nationally would just be how undeserving we were and that we were a "fake ID," as Cowherd would say. If we were a big brand it wouldn't be a big deal, but the media would murder Iowa State for that.

A good showing in a NY6 bowl would be propellant for good conversation about us for the next eight months.

The ESPN people who cant believe we are ranked this high, are also the same people freaking out that Cincinnati & Coastal Carolina arent in the top 4 even though they play in terrible conference and dont have a win as big as us over OU (specially if we win again).

The CFP has never said 'we are taking the 4 teams with the best records'. Nor has it ever said 'we are taking the 4 most deserving teams'. Its ALWAYS been about the 'Eye Test' and right now ISU is on a dominate streak killing bad teams and beating good teams with winning records, we are playing as hot as anyone in the country which is why we are ranked 7th. And thats why Ohio St is still in the top 4 with only 5 games.
I don’t think ESPN can’t believe we are ranked that high, they would rather not have us that high. We don’t have the huge fan base they can market their drivel to (and advertising)
