My first thought was he had done something bad when he was already on double-secret probation and was told to go (a la Coe & Irving). But based on Rhoads' statement and him staying in classes, it does seem to be just a playing time kind of thing.

But if it's playing time, why wait clear the hell until now on the cusp of the season? Why go all the way thru summer and then fall camp? Is it just to preserve a year of eligibility at the next school? I guess that would make some sense. But as others have noted, the DL is definitely a rotational thing - he would have got a lot of snaps, starter or no. Or maybe not, IDK.

And it does remind me of Gannon from last year, in the timing and bewilderment aspect.

If this is the case then now would be the time that you'd expect him to make the decision. There were a bunch of new linemen this year and after camp, he may have seen the writing on the wall. If this is about playing time, the timing of this announcement fits.

I've been pretty supportive of the coaching staff but if they told him to transfer a week before the first game, that is BS regardless of what he did. If nothing else, its incompetent, but its starting to not surprise me.

I don't think so.

Actually I DO think so. To me it appears this is in fact a guy making a decision on his own. Considering he likely was going to be suspended for the first game, plus the addition of Tucker Leath and Ayeni and then compounded by the likely impending change to a 3-4, it makes all the sense in the world. He competed in camp and just before the depth chart is to be released he bolts. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that he was recruited over with 3 guys in the past two years (Tucker, Leath & Ayeni) and now his playing time would be even more limited than last year in the 3-4. If the coaching staff forced him out they would have done it before two a days, not after.

Next man up. If he doesn't want to do the work or was beat out, so be it. Good luck to him.

Yet, it's possible that in a prior meeting, Paul or Wally sat down with him and gave him a rundown of his position on the team with regard to depth chart and other things (if there were other things) and laid out several possible paths for him to take, with conditions attached and waypoints that needed to be achieved on certain paths, and he chose one of the other paths.

Not that I'm saying that I know what happened, but just because that's what the statement was, it can be technically true without being the whole story...and to be honest, if it wasn't a situation where he HAD to go, but he needed to make a few changes...that's exactly how you'd tell it if he chose to go elsewhere and you supported that decision. You wouldn't say the behind the curtain stuff, you'd just say he chose to go elsewhere that fit better, and you support him and will help him make it happen.

I definitely didn't have the body type for the position, but I often begged my coaches to let me play NT on the scout team because I loved the chaos in the middle of the trenches. Ya think Tucker thinks his position ain't fun? Looks like he's enjoying fighting those double teams in the videos I've watched.

What sucks is being a defensive back when a fullback is at full speed and has you in his sights...

He is going to stay in school and has already redshirted so he gains nothing by quitting the team. It reminds me of Phil Bates who quit the team partway through his sophomore year.

In my opinion, it has to be grades. There is no other reason to stay at ISU for the fall semester.

If it were a depth chart thing, he'd leave now and sit out this season at a different school. If he were going FCS, same thing. Since he's already used his redshirt, sitting out this semester, while staying at ISU, just burns a year of eligibility regardless where he goes. If he were eligible, why would you leave the program (and just sit out at ISU) instead of being 3rd string.

Other than grades, I'd the next likely is another arrest or legal issue.

Player retention under Coach Rhoads is ******* terrible. The reason he can't build a consistent bowl team is because his teams are constantly young, inexperienced, and have no depth. You can win with 2 and 3-star players but only if you build and develop them over the course of their careers. Under Rhoads, we have to throw them into the fire before they are ready or we are constantly recruiting JuCo's to fill holes. It isn't recruiting that kills us. We won't win until we keep players in the program.

The Bates situation was weird. He didn't want to be a WR at ISU, quits and goes to Ohio. Boo Jackson is there and better than Phil. Now, he is somehow having a shot in the league as a WR.
