David Sims charged

The irony of this is - Sims steals and uses a credit card...many fans think zero or 1 game suspension is perfectly fine.

Months back when Iowa FB players (and wrestlers) were getting busted for public urination, public intox, etc - KF was not coming down nearly as hard as he should have on them.

THIS

Why do we need to continually bring up KF in this?

It's funny how some fans rant about our obsession with Iowa, yet continually bring up Iowa.

Our sheriff didn't turn himself in either. He got caught and then showed remorse. That is kind of the way it always is. I don't really know of anyone who turns themself in without being caught first.QUOTE]

But you were virtually congratulating Sims for "accepting and acknowledging guilt." That's what I was responding to. It's BS.

Looks to me like it is case closed. Sims makes restitution, pays fine, gets probation. And for ISU Sims gets suspended for a game, loses his captain status, and any other in house penalty that CPR decides.

Sounds fair to me.

Are you serious?

How about "congrats David. You found a card that wasn't yours, didn't use it and turned it in to proper authorities or notified that card company that you found a lost card".

There's no "congratulations" in order here.

Funny how he's a stand up guy after being caught, and not before.....
1) he was dumb, really dumb. Committing the crime was a huge lapse in judgment. I know I wasn't an angel in college, and certainly wouldn't want my grandmother to know about all of my dirty deeds. I think for David though, there's a Johnny Orr quote hiding here.

2) He could plead not guilty and fight this to the hilt. Drag it out for the county, the team, the university, make a show of the whole thing. That does noone any service. So yes, he did something dumb and illegal. He got caught. Now he's owning up to it. And for that, I am grateful.

I agree

Bottom line- Sims did something dumb and illegal. I'm still waiting to hear from somebody, anybody, that didn't do something dumb and illegal, especially when they were young. He doesn't deserve any praise, but he will take his medicine from CPR and pay the price for a first offender. The important thing is that he learns from it and goes on to have a good life, which hopefully includes his great talent for playing football.

Videotape has a tendancy to do that.

I'll buy alot of what you're saying there. Just don't think that "congratulations" is really the right phrase. But he is doing the right thing by not compounding the problem - as you correctly state.

Driving drunk can result in a disaster ten times worse than anything related to illegally buying shoes with somebody else's credit card.

I've done some stupid stuff before, but nothing that even touches this on the stupidity scale.

Hell in college I was all about trying to deposit a fake amount in the ATM deposit and turn around and withdraw it. Then I found out how an ATM works and found out it wouldn't work.

Our former sheriff hasn't made restitution yet. I don't really have a problem with the probation part of his deal. But the money embezzled hasn't been repaid yet. In Sims case it has. BIG difference IMO.

I think it's worse than driving drunk, as being a thief goes to someone's character.

It's not even close to as bad. Sure, it's a mark against your good character to steal. But that just means that maybe people won't trust you. It's not going to hurt anyone but you. Driving drunk can get someone killed.

Aiello got zero penalty for sticking a pool cue in a guy's eye. I consider that worse than what Sims did.

We could debate that, but I agree that crime is poor as well. And when that kid got nothing, ISU fans cried foul about it.

LOL. You don't get it, do you?

The issue isn't about bringing up Iowa ... it's about recognizing HYPOCRISY! Good grief Charlie Brown ....

Some do get it...but claim they don't because admitting they understand why would be admittance of their own hypocritical nature.

You're about to get *****-slapped so hard your unborn great, great grandchildren will feel it. But hypocrisy is exactly my point. Yes, I hate it when fans obsess over Iowa. This isn't about Iowa, it's about drawing comparisons to a like univeristy that fans routinely complain about how they handle their off-field issues.

The same fans for calling Iowa "CrimeU" and that KF was way too soft - are now claiming what Sims didn't isn't that bad and at least he's really, really sorry now that he got caught.

By no means do I think we should kick him off the team. But the way people are defending his actions here is sad.

I think there is plenty of hypocrisy around yes, but I think you are leaving one part out. giving Iowa fans crap, and vice versa

Just like how Iowa fans call us Moo U, etc, it's all in jest, like when people call Iowa "CrimeU". Do most people actually think players should seriously be suspended for several games or get the boot for an MIP?

I would imagine plenty of Iowa fans will make credit card jokes this year, even if they don't think what Sims did was that bad, and ISU fans will continue to laugh at Binns, Hampton, etc, even if they don't believe any of what happened is unforgivable.

Let's not forget that Iowa has had more trouble with the law than ISU recently (past 2 or 3 years). That is part of the reason ISU fans have thought that Kirk's penalties should be stiffer.

I agree that too many ISU fans are being hypocrites, but all fanbases have hypocrites...especially when it comes to judging their rival.

NO ONE is defending Sims' actions. He is wrong. He committed a crime.

What we are arguing over is the severity of the penalty imposed.

Sims is a FIRST time offender. Sims made restitution. Sims is willing to admit his guilt and pay the penalty imposed and submit to probation.

That is a reasonable penalty for a FIRST time offender.

For the football aspect of his penalty. CPR has stated that he will be stripped of his Captain status. And it is said that he will be given a 1 game suspension.

For a first time offender that is a reasonable penalty IMO.

You can argue that the penalties should be more severe. But DO NOT suggest that everyone is defending Sims' actions in this matter. THAT is not true.
