I'm an Iowa fan, and I'd be more than satisfied if it was 1 or 2 games (though I believe your 2nd game is the Iowa game, and I don't want Sims to miss that one), a fairly hefty fine (at least equal to the amount that he allegedly stole), and a ton of community service. That's what Iowa guys get for a DUI (which I can't stand. They should get worse than a slap on the wrist for that), so I can't sit here and say that Sims' punishment should be harsher than that.
First off - wow a realistic hawk fan and i agree 100% with your assessment. I agree there needs to be discipline and i agree that its typical that hawks get slaps on the hands for lesser charges....which can lead to the belief that they can get away with things because they play ball...
Sims is suspended indefinitely, according to the school’s discipline policy for athletes. The code for first-infraction situations like Sims’ states that:
The student-athlete shall be indefinitely suspended from competition and may be suspended from practice.â€
To me - this is the one telling difference in how the two universities handle these issues differently.
At Iowa - regardless of offense, the first comment is always "We will do an internal investigation and wait for the legal process to run its course". The whole time, the student athlete is treated as if nothing happened, able to maintain practice, playing time etc. Now there are instances that the overwhelming evidence has showed the severity of the charges and evidence calls for removal, this is definitely not typical.
At ISU - the Student-Athlete Code states: "For first infraction situations, the student athlete shall be indefinitely suspended from competition and may be suspended from practice".
Case in point, the Adrian Clayborn case and this case are really quite similar in severity of charges if DS pleads down which is expected - both will be simple misdemeanors....AC plays the entire season while the "Legal process runs its course". At ISU he would not have had the option - he would have automatically been suspended, wonder if he would have pleaded down earlier thus actually get suspended rather then not getting any suspension. Remember folks, his original charge was Assault - he got zero games suspended!!!!!
You will see, AC will not be suspended, nor will he miss any practice time. DS is already facing suspension.
So Any Hawk Fan that wants to justify the differences please do so....
IMO what should happen is the Board of Regents which governs all public colleges in Iowa should develop their own Student Athlete Code of Ethics - and the AD should be tasked with enforcing it. That takes the power to suspend or play out of the Coaches hands, after all, they're rewarded financially for success, why wouldnt they want their best players on the field if at all possible???? We as fans, sponsors, boosters etc put the importance on winning - and more times then not have and will sacrifice selling our ethical sole to the devil for success.
I for one, really hope to see Sims gets at least a 1 game suspension, had he not stepped up and admitted guilt, i would have said a minimum 2 game suspension. Dont take that wrong either, he's by far and away the most exciting player on our team and i'm a huge fan. But, i want to do it the right way at the same time...and it is possible, but this will be a proving ground for Coach Rhoads....Good Luck Coach!!!!
