David Irving to DT

I don't recall anyone going too nuts on predictions for the kid . . .
Well, there's "normal people" nuts, and then there's "CycloneFanatic nuts". I'd say there was definitely "normal people" nuts, but that's just your average CF excitement.

I think the fact that he is able to get a large amount of reps in practice at DT is a major reason he got moved. It would be a much tougher transition without those players being dinged up and having to split reps with 2 or 3 other players. He can learn a lot faster this way.

@CycloneFB: Cory Morrissey: "Irving is a great player, so with him moving inside will allow us to have another great player on the field." #Cyclones

Sounds like he wasn't gonna play at DE much... Which is great that we have guys better now than a starter last year.

You could read it that way or you could read it that the DE that replaces him is better than the DT that he replaces. Who knows, he could be the 4th guy at DT and the third guy at DE but with the depth problems at DT it probably still makes sense.

The kid is still young as far as football experience goes so a position that allows him to think less and just play is probably a good thing.

My biggest concern is that the guys that are "dinged up" are actually injured more seriously than we think and not going to be available for a while. Irving may be just fine at DT, just hard to see how this is good from the casual fans view.

I don't understand what the big deal is.

People on here act like playing DT is rocket science. What new schemes does he really have to learn? Basically, forearm somebody in the chin at the snap and hold your gap, or discard the guy and get into backfield.

I'd say a physical specimen like him (who is not very quick) is more suited to that game plan than rushing off the edge. Especially since qb's in this league get rid of the ball so fast. I think a 6' 7" dude that can at least hold his ground in the middle is more valuable than a 6' 7" guy on the edge who can't get to the qb before he throws the ball even if unblocked.

Just my 2 cents anyway.

Umm...yeah. Because CPR and his staff engage in "coach speak" all the time.

Sorry, I'd rather not call him a liar.

You've never heard the term "coach speak", have you?

Apparently he missed the TCU game last fall...

There is a reason that play was his only "incredible" play of the year. That's all I'm saying.

My opinion is that he isn't quick enough to get off the edge. I may be wrong. Who knows. But he certainly hasn't shown that he is... aside from one play in the TCU game.

How does he compare to Lattimer as far as stats go?

Using Irving's play vs TCU to say he is fast to the QB is not a great argument regardless of what side you are on. It was incredible but had nothing to do with speed.

My only point was there is a lot of green between "fast to the quarterback" and "can't get to the quarterback even if unblocked".

Agreed. I think he is a step slow. I'm not sure he is strong enough to physically harness and use his incredibly long limbs.

He really, really, could've used a redshirt.

Seems people are being pretty hard on a kid that has only been in the program two years and plays on the defensive line where physical maturity is very important. If we would have had more depth his freshman year, he would have redshirted and he would only be entering his sophomore year. Hopefully the change is a new start and we see huge gains by him during this year. I think he could end up being a kid that becomes a real stud his senior year.

Gotta agree. People thinking that moving a 6'7" DE that weighs < 280 lbs to interior DT less than three weeks before the season starts is a positive development is a stretch. Sounds like staff thinks there are legitimate depth/injury issues at DT. Not good news.

Unfortunately, I think you are right. Occam's razor on this one.

He tall. He slow. He big. He long. Why do people think its a big deal that the coaches think he can help the team more in the middle? They must think the move makes sense and improves the team.

I think that he'll do fine. He's probably not a starter, but if he can play 20 snaps a game, that would be great. Move him outside on short yardage and goal line. And if he has trouble stopping the run, move him back to DE. They're not out anything.

Unfortunately, I think you are right. Occam's razor on this one.

Either way you look at this move, even if it does work out, is a bit concerning.

Reason A: being that they figure if he was going to be mildly effective at DE, might as well use him at DT for depth reasons

OR

Reason B: DT is that much of a concern that they were willing to take a small hit at DE to help dull the pain there.

I can't see the positive here honestly. But i am hoping for the best.

Seems like DT fits his skill set better to me. He didn't seem to be an off the edge kind of rusher. At DE he seemed to bull rush more than anything else. He didn't seem to have success getting off blocks in space, but he was pretty good at using his length make tackles even when he was being blocked. He obviously is also an issue for the QB if he gets his arms up in the air on passing downs. I think a lot of these translate well to DT. In my opinion, it will be key to limit is number of snaps so he doesn't get worn down.
