I'm actually with him. That's only one player out of really large pool of guys we have played.

Cleyon Laing was with the Raiders for a while and Stephen Ruempolhamer was a good player his senior year. Jacob Lattimer, Willie Scott, Roosevelt Maggitt, and Patrick Neal were all decent players. It's been a lack of talent on the defensive line that's been an issue, not a lack of development.

Laing is playing DE in the CFL now, too. He was out of position at DT here, but played it out of necessity.
What have they had to work with? They have a had a bunch of 6 foot tall guys ranging from undersized to hole pluggers. If you take LBer and maybe OL out of the equation, every position had been underdeveloped. There is no school in the country developing the kind of athlete we have had on the Dline into an NFL player. I mean, really, we have had Maggit, Nelson, Lattimer, Laing, McDonough, Simon. One of those guys has the size to even approach NFL potential. It's really hard to have high quality Dlinemen. I guess when I look at the guys they have had, I consider the coaching job a success.
They have survived with average players and the defense has not suffered greatly from those average players making up most of our line, but I can't give them a ton of credit for developing any individuals outside of McDonough far past where they started.
Guys like Maggit, Lattimer, Laing, Simon, Parker, and even Rump to an extent, those guys never made a jump from one year to the next more than just average development IMO.
It is hard to get talent on the line, and I don't blame them for it, but I can't give them a huge amount of credit for developing any players into studs. Only for using the players effectively in their scheme to allow our defense to be effective in a bend but don't break strategy.
My point was that average was the ceiling for those guys. It's not for guys like Aka or Meyers or Cousins.
If he was redshirted a year and bulked up to 300, then a 6'7 DT would be nice for getting in passing lanes. Maybe they feel he's too slow for DE.
Ok so there's one player but I'm talking about the unit as a whole. We have not had average defensive line play since Rhoads has been here for a consistent amount of time.HAHA Jake McDonough didn't develop.

Did we before Rhoads?
Wow, I just don't see an angle where this is a good thing. Judging by coaches comments, it sure doesn't sound like a move that is making him a hybrid DE / DT, it just sounds like he is a DT.
hGotta agree. People thinking that moving a 6'7" DE that weighs < 280 lbs to interior DT less than three weeks before the season starts is a positive development is a stretch. Sounds like staff thinks there are legitimate depth/injury issues at DT. Not good news.
I'm not convinced Irving is that slow off of the ball compared to our other guys. He takes a longer step, but I'm not really sure he's any slower.
