Cord cutting options

Thread resurrection - because we are old and leery of changing technology, we are slow to make the change to a streaming live TV service. However, Mediacom has just become tooooooo expensive. We would still have to use their internet service to stream on our TVs, but we are planning to drop the cable TV part and the packaged phone part (we haven't used a land line in over 15 years). We don't watch pro ball (NFL, NBA, or MLB, so those don't factor in our decision.

Based on channel selection, inclusion of local channels and ability to record live programming, we have narrowed it down to two options, YouTube + 4G TV and Hulu + live TV.

Those of you that currently have one of those two options, can you tell me what you like or hate about the packages? Sometimes doing side by side comparisons doesn't show the little quirks that can make or break a package or the quality of service.
We have Amazon Prime ($180 a year? or so), Roku(free) and YouTube TV I think $78.10 month. We drop you tube tv from ISUs last basketball game to the first football game. We buy ESPN ($10.00 or so $40/year) by the month to watch ISU basketball when needed. About $105 a month during peak basketball and about $15 a month april though the end of August. I have more tv than I need at all times. So $780.00 a year or so. We are happy watching old shows and you tube when thing get boring and get tired of flipping stations.

Additional info - we have a smart tv upstairs and a regular tv downstairs. We will probably upgrade to smart tv downstairs. We have chromecast devices on both.
My typical preference is to record any shows we want to watch, programming tv series to record in advance. Then we watch them and zap through the commercials. How does that work on YouTube & Hulu?

The thing is you’re only committing for a month, so try them both and see which better fits what you want.

I’m a huge YouTube tv homer. The user interface is 1000x better than Hulu.

unlimited DVR too.

Try both and see which is best for you (YTTV)

ESPN+ is included in the price for Hulu fyi.
Yeah, I saw that. We have the disney/espn/hulu bundle, so I subtracted that off of the cost of the hulu tv and added it to the cost of the youtube. Still only a $20 difference after the trial period is over.

I'm leaning toward the YouTube plan. I was mostly looking to see if there were downsides to either of the services that I was missing. When I was reading through the various cord cutting threads it sounded like the biggest issues people had were the dvr recording/playback/storage capabilities that each one had. Those seem to have resolved since 2022.

YouTube has AMC and Hulu has History, if it matters.

Just as an FYI, Google has a new "Chromecast for YTTV". I bought one to see if there are any improvements. Nothing game changing for me, the remote is a little different and a little faster than the old one. I didn't have a problem with the old one, so not really sure why I even bought it.....

I don't know how a Roku box could "drag down" your internet. If one device can do that, you've got other problems.

One suggestion I would make about the Google TV. There is an app only mode. It eliminates them trying to push content on you and displays exactly what it sounds like: apps only.

oh I know I have internet issues but when streaming through my roku box rather than the tv's software itself, I'm in 480 ALOT more than anything else.

I've noticed it perform better when I'm using the TVs software.

Youtube TV has unlimited DVR, but the shows expire after 9 months. Everything is on the cloud, but it works just like a traditional DVR otherwise -- you can set single things to record, entire series, even something like all NCAA football games. Since it's unlimited (other than the 9 month time limit) it doesn't matter how much you set to record.

brand spankin' new

again, i know i have internet issues, i live in the country. but it shouldn't be so bad that I have to watch live sports in 480. this weekend it drove me nuts. I switched over to my hot spot on my phone just so I could watch our game in HD. Combine that with the game itself, I def lost about 5 years off my life.

last night during SNF it was bad again, so I switched over to the TV's google TV and it streamed in 1080 perfectly fine with no hiccups.

In this cord-cutting nerd's opinion, Roku is my fave, with Google being a very close second. If your Roku is not performing well, my guess is it's not getting a good signal for some reason. But if your Google TV is working great, go with it bro.

I think I'm the last person on earth to finally cut the cord but it's happening.

I just ordered the Roku 4k (got it $60 off!) and its arriving this weekend. Then I'm going to sign up for Youtube TV and take my mediacom equipment back next week.

I used to keep mediacom because they had games on CyclonesTV. Once that went away and now they don't have Tivo (basically any way to record) anymore, there's just no use for it.

I was an early cord cutter. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
