Column: Don't sleep on Sam

I'm still more concerned about OL play than QB play for the first game. I'm confident both of these guys can get it done.

If the offense is going to experience some growing pains, Sam is probably the best guy to have out there with his ability to scramble.

I have been rewatching the games from last season and the offensive line in the second half of the season got a lot better. If anything, we have even more depth than we did last season.

"Dalton must improve his performance under pass rush pressure. His statistics under pressure are miserable: 39 attempts, 101 completions, 38.6% completion percentage, 3 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 47.3 QB rating. His QB rating drops 46.1 points when you compare unpressured and pressured dropbacks."

QUOTE]

I'll take the guy that can rack up 101 completions on 39 attempts all day long.

I like Sam a lot and I hope Mangino can help his read recognition. I have a really hard time purging that UNI game from my memory though. There were several times that damn near everyone in my section was shouting "get rid of the ball!"

I think our receiving core is going to make whoever is behind center better than what we saw last year. We have one of the best combinations of speed and possession guys that I can remember in a long time. I expect to see a lot of quick patterns to get the QB settled.

Whatever happens, I'm confident that Mangino will not let our offense mirror what we had to deal with last year.

I'd like to sleep on this Sam.

A running QB brings so much to the college game. If Sam and Grant's throwing accuracy is anywhere close, I'd like to see Sam in there.

But with Mangino on the staff we have a guy who knows what it takes. I trust he will make the right decsion on which guy he thinks is the best of the two.

I also think Sam also protects the ball well (less INT's). A few of his INT's last year were just freak occurrences (tipped passes, etc). I don't know if I just feel that way because he was replacing Steele J-INT-z, and just was an improvement by comparison.

Damn we should have kept feeding the Van Der Kamp kid, big time ypc :jimlad::jimlad::jimlad:

98 carries? No wonder he got destroyed.

that'll happen when teams know the read option is coming and force the read. Would have been nice to see some sort of adjustment other than just getting him killed every time they ran a zone read.

Agree that Sam is a possibility to start at QB. I am thinking a tie will go to Rohach being the starter though.

I'd have to disagree. In a dead heat, I think the nod should go to Sam. He's got more experience, and is a more elusive threat when running the ball.

Sam has been 3rd string all spring. Wouldn't be surprised to see him as a 3rd stringer all season.

This is way wrong.

Sam was the most impressive QB in the scrimmage, although that's still not saying a whole lot.
