I saw some FB ads for the Breece Hall Football Camp. I am thinking of signing up my 8 y/o son - he would be excited for the novelty, football, and "meeting" an ISU/NFL player he has watched for most of his post-toddler life.

I then saw it is $150 for 9am-1pm. I might even be okay with that - I am realistic that these are probably mild money grabs for the organizers and pros, and more about kids meeting a pro and getting an autograph, and I accept the "football instruction" will be very limited due to brief time and camp size...but I'm mostly just worried it will just be a very amateur unorganized mess and they'll do like 2 drills and otherwise just stand in line for sign ups, for swag bags, and for a photo...

Has anyone had experience with these players camps? Good experience for your kids? Or ended up being a high-expectations let-down?

Ages: 6-16
June 15, 2024

JAMES COWNIE SOCCER PARK

1st hour is camper check-in, group assignments, & sponsor giveaways

Over the course of the day, former Iowa State and current New York star Running Back, Breece Hall and our coaches will provide your child with valuable football knowledge and hands-on instruction in a fun, high-energy, positive environment. Camp activities will include lectures, fundamental skill and competitive stations. All campers will be grouped according to age to ensure proper levels of competition and instruction.

We ask that all campers please come dressed in athletic attire (gym shorts, cleats, and/or sneakers). This comprehensive football learning experience is a great way for athletes of all skill levels to get active and learn something new to apply to their journey within the sport of football. Whether your child is new to the game or a seasoned player looking to further develop their skills, we’re sure our camps will be of benefit to him or her. We are committed to providing your child with a second to none experience of a lifetime at an affordable price.

Each camp participant will receive:

I’ll be honest my kids have done many of these. If you want good instruction/development these aren’t it. If you want your kid to get super excited about the game and to have a good time these are worth it. Nature of the beast - there is only so much you can learn in 4 hours.

Basketball experience but likely similar. I'll never forget my older brother going to a Eustachy camp when Sullivan was still on the team. He called my brother Lil Sully because he had a buzz cut. But we both got a lot more actual development going to week long camps at Creighton, Devries ran those when he was under Altman and did a great job.

Bryce is 100 percent correct on this. If your kid loves football and is a huge Breece fan, than it may be worth it. It is something that they can look back on and remember the time that they got to hang out with a superstar running back for a few hours.

But you are unlikely to get a ton of great instruction/development from the event.

Agree. It would be a fun experience, but if you want the kids to learn more about the game, find a high school that runs a summer camp, maybe. My middle schooler has and will again attend a high school camp in CR. It's $40, two hours a day for three days. Usually 10-20 kids.

Drake and Grandview run really, really good youth camps that are like half days for a whole week if you are around the metro.

This is what I was going to ask. In middle school and elementary school I went to Buena Vista wrestling camp for a week. In high school I went to Iowa/OKSt/Granby with my team but I remembered the Buena Vista camp was comparable quality and probably a much better deal for my family. They ran it like an army camp back then, very disciplined.

I went to Upper Iowa basketball camp for 4-5 years in elementary/Jr High in early to mid 80s. Dropped off on Sunday, picked up Fri afternoon. A fantastic camp and it filled up fast. Coach Prochaska was a great person.

these always seem like a cash grab to me
It’s 100% what they are.

That said, taking little JM next week on our annual June excursion to Ames for the little kids Cyclone football one. 4th year in a row and He hasn’t ever learned a damn thing but the players (outside of one year Dekkers being an ass to him) are awesome and he has an absolute BLAST. I told him I’ll take him every year as long as he wants to go. Making sure he’s a clone for life ;)

those seem a little more friendly, though. With the whole (or most of) cyclone football team whereas, you have one NFL athlete putting on a camp with some random company (just guessing) where he probably doesn't want to be there but it looks good for him on the local/national level and he gets paid along with the company behind it.

I'm not saying Breece is doing that because of that reason, but i think most of the time the athlete is.

Small college camps are good if your kid is into a sport. I'd say the D3 type schools are good for hoops, and Jucos do a good job with baseball and football (for those that have them).

The ISU things are fun for kids to get to meet ISU players and not a whole lot else. As long as you know it going in, then no problem. Kids will have a blast if they are into ISU sports.

Thanks for these replies - we ended up also signing him up for the Little Cyclone camp starting this morning at Jack Trice (Johnny Majors/Bergstrom) and maybe will find a b-ball or something else at local schools.

The 'Little Cyclones' camp will be two longer mornings (8-12) vs one short morning, and looked like a well-oiled machine. Coach Campbell gave them a good 'opening talk' - being encouraging teammates, good listeners, work hard you've got real players as your coaches, etc. Should be an awesome experience/memory.

So thanks @JM4CY for noting it, otherwise I would have looked too late...I should have replied late last week for anyone else who could have used the deadline - otherwise a heads up to check it out next year!

If anyone did do the Breece Hall one over the weekend, I hope that was good too! (and better than the cynical/pessimistic curmudgeons among us : )

As I'm writing this, I'm sitting at the Cyclones Football Camp watching many of our star players working with the young kids. So impressed with the way our players interact with the kids, especially Rocco Becht. Everyone looks like they're having a blast, coaches and kids included.

Very welcome, my man. My son always has a blast and today was no different. He went ass over t*ts leaping too high on the tackling dummy and about broke his neck. JR Singleton got a good laugh. I asked little JM if he wanted to take a break for a few minutes, which he looked at me like I just asked him if he wanted to cancel Christmas. Not happening.
