Brandon Jensen back on team

There's different ways to run a 4-3. Some have a NG that is asked to occupy blockers freeing up the other guys, others use two tackles. We used Jensen to occupy blockers making his stats take a hit.

Okay, here are the stats from a very good DL that plays to the East. Look at his 2012 numbers and you will see that he was not a lot better than Jensen was last year. I am not saying that BJ will be that good, but you can not look at the stats from last year and draw absolute conclusions. If he can get back in football shape by Fall he will most likely be the best NG on the team. Now that may not make him great, but is certainly is a great addition to the team.

Carl Davis didn't start a game for Iowa in 2012. Jensen started every game last year. That isn't a fair comparison. If you're going to compare him to Davis do it to his numbers last year when he started every single game... 42 tackles 4 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks

In a perfect world I would like a guy who is occupying two blockers and making a bunch of tackles. However, that guy is probably so roided up he is probably doing stupid stuff that is getting him suspended all of the time.

Like that Suh guy for example.

Alright, time to win the Big 12, also a National Championship would be nice this year, but I'll settle for a Big 12 championship.

And second team all big 10. So again we aren't comparing to the average.

I think Cousin can become that guy. But yes that would be the preference. But since they don't grow on trees that positions main duty is to occupy blockers.

I am not 100% sure we run a defense where the NT is responsible for 2 gaps. I think we run a 1 gap defense, someone can correct me if I'm wrong. That will sometimes necessitate a double team but I don't think it is his main responsibility. I'm not expert though.

If we had kept Jensen, Coe, and Irving I don't think we'd be hearing anywhere near the amount of negativity about the DL that we currently are.

Getting Jensen back helps A LOT!

We all know why Irving had to go, three strikes and all that, he just wasn't all that interested in staying on a college football team. Would rather be involved in a bunch of off the field stuff that jeopardized his college life.

I don't know much about Rodney's situation or if Rhoads would ever take him back/why he was still hanging around sidelines during spring game and all that. We could really use his body for depth obviously, but I hope Rhoads does the right thing either way. If he wants to earn his way back on - so be it.

Based on what Trey Scott has said recently there is no chance Coe comes back.

I was agreeing with you until you saying he's an above average NG in the Big 12.

Let's face facts. He is not a guaranteed starter on a team that will likely be picked in the lower 1/3 of the Big 12, and that team's interior d-line is probably in the bottom 1/3 as well.

Name me 5 teams he would start for....

No, no, no. Said he wasn't below average. Did not say he was above average.

Like I said, we are nitpicking here. He's an experienced player in the B12, and he's returning to a position that desperately needed another body. It's great news for the football program. I don't think that can be overstated. It's probably the best news the football team could ask for right now because the interior defensive line is widely regarded as their weakest position.

This.

And this year? He would've been behind Coe Irving and Cousin. Now two of those guys leave and he is suddenly back.

I think this was the moment this thread went negative. Which is crazy considering this is the best news I could have possibly expected today.

Admittedly, I glanced at a handful of team's starting interior defensive lineman and their average numbers. The better teams had guys closer to 40 tackles, and the average was between 25-35. Sure it would be more accurate to compare him simply to other NG's, but in my opinion what I did still gives you the idea that he's probably a slightly below average player at his position. I'm not going to take the time to find NG's to compare him to. It seems plenty of others here agree with this perspective. I totally disagree with you when you say he's not a below average NG for the B12. I don't think he would contribute on more than 3-4 B12 rosters.

Only thing is that Brandon Jensen just completed his Junior season. I expect him to improve this coming season. So I consider him to be a very decent player for the Cyclones at NG. Probably not all conference type of good. But how many players really are that good. And the thing to remember is that if Brandon Jensen does NOT start that his replacement Devlyn Cousin is that much better. So now we are looking at possible improved play at the NG position over last year. His return is huge for our upcoming season.

Based on Shane's comments and what CW's said it sounds like Jensen will play the three technique.

Just saw that. Thanks. So that means that Jensen and Cousin line up next to each other. I like that.......a lot.

Boy Shane is spot on with this quote: He said he was still working out and running,” Burnham said. “I can tell you this – most football players, the minute they get done playing unless they are training for the NFL, they don’t want to get near a barbell. After playing for four years, most of them try to get down and be as skinny as possible. That’s their goal. The fact that he was still working out and running, I told my wife that I wasn’t so sure that football was out of this young an yet. The fact that he was still running and working out meant something.

As soon as I was done with FB I didn't touch a weigh for at least a year and I still haven't went running.

I am super pumped about him coming back. Read all of my posts in the thread. It's not a negative comment. I didn't even think for a second that people would think his return was not PT related.
