Brandon Jensen back on team

Just to be clear the team was practicing a 3-4 defense this spring. Not as the base, but as a front they would use.

True, as a rush package mosty likely, which is why we have some hybrid guys at several positions. There is a lot of chatter about switching to a 3-4 full time, which with this young defense, could be like learning a whole new language. I don't see that happening. Wally tweaked a lot of 3-4 concepts at USF, but he has been a 4-3 base guy.

Yeah of course the practice of actually changing it to your base defenes would be something you don't do unless you get a new defensive coordinator or something really drastic happens.

I am intrigued by going to a 3-4 when Wally retires, though. More speed on the field, more ways to rush the passer, less defensive linemen to recruit, more linebackers to recruit, ect.

I'm not in any way saying Jensen is some type of All-American NFL player, but he's also not a below average NG for the Big 12.

I was agreeing with you until you saying he's an above average NG in the Big 12.

Let's face facts. He is not a guaranteed starter on a team that will likely be picked in the lower 1/3 of the Big 12, and that team's interior d-line is probably in the bottom 1/3 as well.

Name me 5 teams he would start for....

Whether he starts or not is irrelevant. Having him adds depth to the NG postition and I believe he will back up Cousin. Or they could split snaps. Really does not matter. What matters is that we have 2 guys vs. one who doesn't get worn down by the 3rd quarter. Critical vs. the K States, UI's and even NDSU.

One of you is saying not above average and one of you is saying not below average. So… average? By definition wouldn't that be the majority?

There is no doubt he helps out tremendously, but thats because we were so thin at the DT and NG position, not because he was so great.

Go rewatch the Iowa game for example. Against a physical, run it down your throat type team, he and many others on the d line were continuously getting pushed backwards 5 or more yards.

Off the field and attitudes aside, if I had the choice between Coe, Irving, or Jensen, he'd be my 3rd pick.

But given the situation, I'm glad he his back, and I don't see any negative side to him coming back.

Completely agree with this. Without him, some of those 4th quarters would get real ugly, especially if we need a stop late in the game.

If our MLB is leading the team in tackles, the NG is doing a great job. If our safeties are leading the team in tackles, not so good.

For sure, I talked to him.

Very cool. Glad to see Brun back. What is he doing now?

And to stay on the OP topic, what did he think of the defensive line and the chances of Jensen coming back?

The point is that if you just go look through each roster at the tackles for DLine, you won't get an accurate comparison. Most rosters will list both interior positions at DT, so in order to get a real comparison you'd have to take the time to look at depth charts for each team to see who was playing the nose. More work than I'm assuming you did.

Admittedly, I glanced at a handful of team's starting interior defensive lineman and their average numbers. The better teams had guys closer to 40 tackles, and the average was between 25-35. Sure it would be more accurate to compare him simply to other NG's, but in my opinion what I did still gives you the idea that he's probably a slightly below average player at his position. I'm not going to take the time to find NG's to compare him to. It seems plenty of others here agree with this perspective. I totally disagree with you when you say he's not a below average NG for the B12. I don't think he would contribute on more than 3-4 B12 rosters.

Like I said, we are nitpicking here. He's an experienced player in the B12, and he's returning to a position that desperately needed another body. It's great news for the football program. I don't think that can be overstated. It's probably the best news the football team could ask for right now because the interior defensive line is widely regarded as their weakest position.

Does a 3-4 add more speed? It's pretty similar to a 4-3 under which is like 5 DL since the 3-4 OLB's are typically speedy DE's and the NT is huge and the DE's are usually DT's in a 4-3.

Yeah it does. Those OLBs are more LB than Dline. They have to be athletic enough to cover and to blitz and move around on their feet.

He'll give us some depth and he's another body with some valuable experience but our defensive line is still going to be god awful. I'm guessing a good DII program could probably run at will on our defensive line. I think the secondary should be pretty solid but the LB's and D-line are going to atrocious. Hoping the offense doesn't suck

Okay, here are the stats from a very good DL that plays to the East. Look at his 2012 numbers and you will see that he was not a lot better than Jensen was last year. I am not saying that BJ will be that good, but you can not look at the stats from last year and draw absolute conclusions. If he can get back in football shape by Fall he will most likely be the best NG on the team. Now that may not make him great, but is certainly is a great addition to the team.

The OLB's rush the passer a lot more often than they drop back. A lot more often.

Usually there is one guy that is a specialized pass rusher but those guys are usually very athletic. They can move. They aren't big heavy linemen. 3-4 defenses don't rush 5 every single down.

They do have to have the ability to effectively drop back into coverage, though. Another element of speed that the 3-4 offers is the uncertainty for the offense. If the backers are well coached they can mask the blitz and the O-line doesn't know where the rush is coming from even if you are only bringing 4 since it could be coming from any one of the 4 backers.
