Billy Gillispie

There were two in 1999.
Link?

This is from an article when he was arrested in 2009: Ex-Kentucky Wildcats coach Billy Gillispie arrested for DUI - ESPN
The arrest marks at least the third time Gillispie has been accused of driving under the influence. In 1999, Gillispie was arrested on two charges: driving while intoxicated and improper use of a lane in Tulsa, Okla., where he was an assistant coach under Bill Self.

He eventually pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving. The other charges were dismissed.

In 2003, in his first year as head coach at the University of Texas-El Paso, he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. The charges eventually were dismissed after a specially appointed prosecutor decided that there was not enough evidence to suggest that Gillispie was drunk. The coach, then 43, maintained his innocence through that process.

Gillispie addressed his mistakes during his introductory press conference at Kentucky in April 2007, saying he wasn't "proud of some of things that I've done."
While he may have a fourth, I can't find anything substantiating that claim.

One is an over exaggeration and the other is an understatement.

The latter may be an understatment, but I don't think the former is an exageration AT ALL. Based on the home attendance numbers the last few games of this season, I think we have a pretty good idea what it's going to look like next year if Mac is back and it ain't gonna be pretty.

Not as much as you would think. Maybe massive is a bit of hyperbole, but you really think fans aren't sick of seeing this? You think, given the choice, they wont save the money on season tickets and maybe hit a game if they are good?

And on the BG topic, I agree with what someone said earlier, the fact that he is being rumored for coaching jobs indicate that most believe he has been rehabilitated. So put a little more midly:

If you are the athletic director, do you, seeing the trend of a decrease in ticket sales and a frustration amongst many about the direction of the program, or do you look to hire a coach who has proven at one point to be one of the best coaches in the nation who seems to have been rehabilitated from his alocholism?

As the AD, ISU's next coaching hire, if GMac is replaced, must be for the long term. The next hire must be someone that will be around for awhile to bring stability. BG doesn't bring that. If he has success in the short-term, he's gone because he's proven that he wants higher profile jobs. If he embarrasses the department, he's gone. If he doesn't have success in the short-term, he's gone because apparently that's what the fan base wants. Someone to win right now. The next coach needs to win in the short-term but be willing to stay for the long-term. BG does not fit the profile.

I don't want BG here. His coaching ethics are questionable and I wouldn't put it past him to pull a Chizik on us and take the first better job that comes up. How this thread ever got this long is mind boggling really.

wikipedia basically says the same thing as that link.
I just want the claims on here to reflect the truth. Does it matter if he had 3 or 4? Not really. But I can guarandamntee you that if people were on here saying he had 2 DUIs, the people against Billy G as a prospective coach would be hollering that it was more than that.

DUIs:

Floyd - 0
Gillispie - 4

I can forgive or forget all the other stuff if he's "cleaned it up", but 4 DUIs is absolutely unacceptable for me. He's just damn lucky he didn't kill himself or someone else.

I think you misunderstood my post. I was taking a "shot" at any potential posters here that think Floyd is irrehensible, yet would welcome Gillispie here. (I agree that Gillispie's "baggage" >>>> Floyd's "baggage")

The only factual thing Floyd has done to ISU's dismay was leave ISU for the Chicago Bulls, when at the time of his departure he thought he would of been coaching Jordan and Pippen. Nevermind the HUGE raise.

The OJ Mayo stuff is just an accusation. One that I personally believe is hogwash.

You are right.

As close as I can tell, the 4 came from these posts, with no attribution or claims of certainty.

Doesn't he have like 4 DUIs? After the Eustachy deal, I highly doubt he would even get consideration.

I would be curious if this is another "source" saying this or the same "source" that got the thread on HR started.

3 or 4. Last I heard he was in rehab down here.

Current coaching staff has ruined ISU MBB.

Looking for any form of hope will lead you in strange places.

BG's short term success would spring-board us back to relevance, meaning if he would leave he would leave us in a position to hire a better coach due to a more diserable coaching position.

Also, to say that the fans want short term success is overreaching. I don't think the fans would be calling for McDermott's head if he had shown any sign of progress. 4 years may not be enough to build a contender, but after 4 years you should be able to at least field a competitive team. He hasn't even come close to doing that.

Hiring a coach is risky no matter the state of the program. You don't hire someone just so you can go through the hiring process again in two or three years. Every hire increases the risk of failure.

Nice overreaction.

Please if you think that our programs, including Men's Basketball, are squeaky clean, then you are either naive or have an agenda on here.

I wonder which it is???

And he calls me out for crap like that? Just more comic relief from bawbie. :biglaugh:

I wasn't responding to Gillispie (although I am adamantly against ANYONE with 4 DUIs).

I was responding to posts like the one below, which seems to be saying to me that we shouldn't value honor before victory.

Okay you sir/ma'am have GOT to get a grip, we have got to be the WORST condition we've been in since the canning of LE WM, 10 years and look where we're at, keep in mind we won back to back big 12 titles, now where are we? 11th in the Big 12. 11th!!! my god you must like meritocracy, hell we should keep GM til his contract is up we'll be AWESOME by then. :jimlad:
Unless you want ISU to stay in the bottom of the big 12 and continue to get the **** kicked out of us, by all means keep GMac, but if you want to get a new coach that is a proven winner and can turn a program around, then bring in BG.

What the ****?

My post had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH KEEPING McDermott!

Good grief, try reading before posting.

on previous pages, you've stated you want to keep GMac, which i'm not getting right about now, i do believe you change your mind about the situation every other day, i'm not attacking, but who would you like besides BG?
Davis? wouldn't bother me so much

What a **** thing to say. They have not had the season they hav wanted, but work there tails off week in and week out and have had nothing but heartbreak. Its not like we are getting killed every week. I have no problem wanting a coaching staff, but don't be an *** to the players, its easy to call someone a loser from your computer screen...

Here is a hint, maybe, just maybe, the teams we face are playing down to our level? I seriously doubt we get the best effort out of many teams. Most the times they probably just expect to show up, mess around, go on a nice 10 to 12 point run in the second half without a timeout by McD, and then coast to a victory. It is almost formulaic in how teams beat us, I wonder why?

You're right. Every team but one had a bad day when they played us.

Quite a few of them did actually.

But with no credit to our team or coaching staff in any of those cases? Come on. I don't think Mac will get it done here but to say that the team or he himself had nothing to do with any of those teams not playing their best is unreasonable.
