OU and UT heading to the SEC is bad for the state of Texas and Oklahoma. OSU, Tech, Baylor, TCU, and the cities involved will take a hit. UT already has a side deal that will pay them more than membership in the SEC. If I am an OK or TX legislator I think this is bad for the University Systems, and their constituents as a whole. Add in TAMU and Houston, and take us back to 12. We will not have SEC money, but close enough to win championships.

Why the "LOL"? Those are public universities that take public funds. The state government should have some input if them leaving the conference has a negative impact on other state funded universities.

Good luck with that. Let me know when Texas and Oklahoma block this move.

It’s more likely(a hell of a lot more likely) that the Big12 adds a combination of BYU, Houston, Cincinnati, Memphis, and UCF than it is for Oklahoma, Texas, and aTM returning.

Pragmatic thinking is not allowed here ;).

lol, omg, byob, wake me up when that happens, is juvenile. Nobody said it is going to happen. TX or OK would not "Block" anything, the states need to approve the actions of the Universities.

For adults on this board, why would the State of OK or TX want to go down this path? Mizzou, yes, more money, and the conference was shaky, but if the Texas schools stick together on these things it would matter for the State of TX, as an example. Baylor just won a National Title in Basketball. That does not happen if Baylor is in the Big Nobody conference.

Why are you posting here? Why aren't you picking up your old rotary dial phone and calling the good 'ol texas legislatures and talking to them directly?

Yeah, this is dumb. Even the Kansas state legislature is going to ultimately allow KU to separate from K-State if not allowing them to do so ends up dragging both down.

No, the state of Texas does not need to 'approve' the move of the University of Texas to the SEC just as they did not have to approve A&M's move in 2011.

There is no law on the books or in the state constitution that can prevent UT from leaving the Big12.

The Texas legislature does not meet again until the summer of 2023 (barring a special session that the UT graduate governor is not going to call).

The best that the state legislature could do is to threaten to withhold some funding from the university (but not from the PUF as that is written into the state constitution). And while reps from Baylor/TCU/Tech may threaten to **** with the university in the next budget - there is zero chance anything like that would pass or get the governors signature.

At this point there is nothing that is going to prevent Texas from leaving. Even litigation is an empty threat - Texas can/will claim sovereign immunity if things ever get ugly enough that they think their move or finances might be threatened.

States control State Universities. It seems to be in the best interest of the State of Texas to not have the SEC sideline several state universities. Ultimately the State has the control. The question is, 'How is it in the best interest of the state of Texas to marginalize the athletic departments of Baylor, TCU, Tech, and possibly Houston? At one point the State of TX cared, they squeezed Baylor, Tech, and TCU into the Big 12, what has changed? Why do Baylor, Tech, and TCU no longer matter to the state legislature? This is a legitimate question.
