Best donuts in Des Moines

I've been on a donut kick lately. Besides Krispy Kreme, these are the only 3 that I've been to. All were great and I'd actually put Hurts in a separate category. Hurts seems more like a splurge instead of an actual donuts for breakfast place.

My Top 3 places

1. Hurts Donuts WDM
2. Ambrosia Donuts Ankeny
3. Daylight Donuts Ankeny

I've never been there, but Donut Hut on Douglas has a good rep

Hurts is overrated. The amount of stuff they put on top is just window dressing for a pretty average donut.

Daylight donuts are hard to beat. There used to be one in Norwalk, but I think it closed during Covid. there is another one in Ankeny

Our family kind of does this on occasion. A couple that are not all over the place.

ChuChu Donuts on the edge of downtown on 9th St. Will add cream or a jelly to the inside of the donut if you want it.

Mahalo's just up the street from Valley Stadium. Hawaiian type vibe for donuts and coffee.

Best donuts I have ever had, without question, are from Blue Star donuts in Portland, Oregon. Their classic buttermilk old fashioned is all you need, but if you want to branch out and try other flavors, they've got those too.

I love HyVee and Casey’s long Johns. Also Price Chopper used Dahls old donut recipes last I knew. Best frosting for sure.

Hiland Bakery has some great donuts on the NE side of Des Moines

Donut King is amazing! They used to be in old West Des Moines until their building got rezoned and bought out, They moved to the east side and now they are on University by the fair grounds. I'll throw a vote out there for Donut Hut too, that place is solid.

Peanut butter and jelly donuts are awesome when they have them.

Daylight Donuts in Chadron, Nebraska is almost worth the trip...

Their fritters are awesome second only to Jaarsma. Really miss the Daylight on E 14th. ChuChu is really good but pricey. Hurts is way overrated. HyVee has a solid bakery as well.
