Whatcha also had a booth at the fair. Line looked too long so I didn't stop.

That’s too bad we were at the fair yesterday and spent of the time at Beef Quarters and Iowa Pork Producers/Bud tent

Nothing wrong with those spots either.
I'd say Whatcha looked to be on the South end.

We tried their new Iowa Sm-oak-ed roll, that's in the finals of the "best new fair food" contest. I thought it was pretty bland and flavorless. I'm a big fan of their BBQ, but I have no idea how this particular item made it to the finals. Maybe it's the presentation.

That must have been the big line then. I didn't know about that item.

Tried Bubbies in Ankeny today. I thought it was pretty solid. They did a great job on their ribs.

I like that they are BBQ only. Simple menu.

Agree with what’s been said. I had cornbread for the first time last summer and had no clue what I was getting myself into. Totally shocked by how delicious it was.

Side note, given it’s location, I feel strongly it’s a miss that they don’t have some sort of bread item that has the name “pokey” in it to pay some kind of homage to the restaurant that used to be at that location.

I’ve found that most new “best” fair foods aren’t actually very good. The brisket Mac and cheese sandwich that was the big winner last year, was not good at all in my opinion.

I didn't have that but has the other 2 new foods and it would oglf had to be amazing to beat out the bacon cheeseburger egg roll that I could of ate multiples of. My daughter had the lobster corn dog and I got a bite of that and it was pretty awesome too.

If you visit Watcha Smokin location in Luther I recommend go early as they are a true BBQ place that once they are out of something for the day that's it. We try to go right around opening now as first couple times we tried them they were already out of ribs before 5pm.

They must be really hit or miss. Mine was probably the worst BBQ I’ve had anywhere. The brisket was dry as a bone and flavorless. The burnt ends were ok but suuuuper smoky as in that’s all you tasted. The Mac and cheese wasn’t even melted.

I know a couple others that also said it was terrible, especially the ribs.

Oh, I'm familiar with their Luther location. We go there fairly regularly in the summer months, and really like it. That's why I was surprised that their new offering at the fair was not fantastic.
We also tried the bacon cheeseburger egg rolls and while they were better, I still didn't think they were amazing. Really, really greasy. Maybe the frier wasn't hot enough when they made ours, because it was just a grease bomb, and that was the dominant flavor of it.

I tried the Iowa Sm-oak-ed Roll Friday and thought it was really good. For only going to the fair once, I am glad I tried it.
