Bates' father speaks out

- “He helps you beat Iowa, but even at receiver he never played.” - so, now he wants Bates in at receiver, taking time away from training at QB? That would certainly slowed his progress for this year...

i agree, this says it all. but lets focus on this. why DO we think? i think its because Phil Sr. is a nut case. and no matter how mature a 20 year kid has gotten, he is still going to respect his dad enough to follow his direction.

Again, as long as Gene was honest with PB (and I suspect he was), this won't be a big deal. These guys have been involved in sports all their lives, and they have probably encountered some things in this neighborhood before.

The players saw that Bates got several chances in the first three games, even at UNLV. They put PB in against Iowa inside ISU's own five yard line. What does that say about equal opportunities? It says a lot to me. If you didn't have confidence in him and believe that he was somewhere in your plan, you don't put him in that game at that spot. Period.

I am sure Andrew had a follow up to that, and PBSr may have just said he is not going to go into it. Ask Chizik, something like that.

Bates' dad has pushed the staff since the beginning to do things his way and that is simply not how they work. Daddy wanted Bates to be the number one started and flat out called the staff liers when they suggested that he wasn't the stronger QB in practices. When faced with the fact that his son son would not be the starting QB without earning the job, daddy took Philip aside and told him he was quitting the team.

So in essence, Philip Jr didn't quit, as his dad says - his dad yanked him because he didn't get his way.

I don't think anyone will be sad to be rid of the elder Bates.
 
I wouldn't worry about Bates Sr. tearing the team apart. He is in Omaha and most college athletes don't have the time or energy to pay attention to the paper or sports radio...

I was perhaps a little harsh and should have clarified - in the series in question in Bates' quote (the Kent State series), he'd just been sacked twice. In that series, I think it's fair to say he played poorly. Chizik was being kind by saying he pulled him due to fatigue.
 
Is it just me or do others think that Bates, Sr. is hurting his kid's chances with other schools? What coach would want this situation? He might be a good athlete, but does any coach really want to deal with the father of an athlete like this? Seems to me a lot of coaches would just as soon pass.
 
wait a second... does anyone know if p'allens dad moved to omaha when p'allen went to creighton? maybe he befriended Phil Sr and is behind all of this.
 
If it says anything, I saw Phil in class today - good thing. He seemed like he was a little rattled, I am concerned for the guy and hope he makes some good choices for himself, whether staying here or going elsewhere. I got the impression from how he acted that he was in a tough position. It led to me calling my dad to thank him for not being overbearing and letting me make my own choices.
 
My guess is that both PB and his dad realized that PB was not going to beat out AA in the short term or long term. They wanted to make sure he wasn't injured during this year and damaging his ability to transfer to another school and thus they pulled out of ISU. Yes, this is quitting, but it is also protecting dad's investment in his kid. No reason to put yourself in harms way for a team you already know you won't be on. I definitely don't condone the move, however I can understand why they did it.

I believe that PB's dad has overvalued his son's ability as a D1 quarterback and forced him to quit at a school that was willing to give him a fair chance. Best of luck to him in the future, but my money is on him never being heard from again.

I'll take exception to that quote as well. It was a long yardage down. Everyone in the stadium knew why Bates was yanked...because Arnaud is the better passer and the coaches didn't have the confidence in Bates to pick up the first down. What was Chizik supposed to say to the media? "We didn't think that Bates could make the throw needed to pick up the first down?" I have no doubt that Bates wasn't really tired, but a good coach doesn't throw his players under the bus Steve Alford-style.

If I remember right, the big reason he chose ISU is because Mac promised him a shot at QB when other schools were recruiting him for other positions.

He got his shot at QB... he didn't win the job.

He didn't play much at WR last year... because he didn't win the job.

Out of all the fans, media, etc... Dad is the only one screaming bloody murder over Phillip not playing. Why? Because he's not good enough to start at any position on this team.

It's a shame dad has to drag coach's name through the mud in the process.

With that said I hope the best for the kid. I hope he lands on his feet and does well.
 
AA is the better QB right now. In the Kent State game, I remember the two plays and I remember Bates getting up slow from the second run. He also seemed to limp a little, though it was nothing. AA came in a Bates went out and spoke to a coach and trainer. Then returned later. I think coaches and trainers were being careful. As for the redshirt year. Bates first played as a running QB with deer in the headlights look in his eyes. Remember, AA was injured at the start of the year and they needed Bates to get some idea of what playing QB was like in case Meyer got hurt or sucked worse than he did. Then, as AA started to get back to playing ability, they used Bates at WR, long after the redshirt was gone. He did not play reciever against Kent State or UNI, his first time was against eiu if I remember correctly.

I wouldn't say that he couldn't start at ANY position on the team. He (or maybe his dad) just doesn't want to TRY any other position than QB. I think if PB really applied himself, he'd see time at WR, PR, FS or maybe RB.
