Hopefully they don't waste a redshirt year like they did with Bandauer. they threw him in for about one drive late in a game. I forget if the starter went down or what, but it couldve been used as a redshirt year cause he hadn't redshirted yet, or played any more that year.

Still trying to figure out the plan for Bates in this whole scheme. I know the inclination is to say that it can only help to have two great QBs, but I don't think QB controversies are good for a team, and few QBs are willing to switch like Flynn.

Do you think that Bates will stay (maybe he has that mentality that he can beat out Arnaud)? I would think that he'd leave shortly if the top spot is tied up.

Went back to a Anniversay back in Iowa and talked to his Grandpa- who said he is adjusting very well, people do not realize, but his mom was a very good athlete ( I was a year behind her in HS...Can you believe she picked John Arnaud over me...) a little sense of humor there folks......HITMAN

No offense dude, but I'm glad she picked John. Unless, of course, you could concieve a quarterback better than Austin, or posibbly a 6'3" 250lb. All-american stud DE. A 6'8" 320 man-child lineman, perhaps?:)

If Arnaud is not redshirted, I will be PISSED!

We've already got Van Winkle at backup. No need to screw him out of playing time, for a true freshman, regardless of how good he is. That's like putting Flynn in as Seneca's backup his senior year.

That is, unless Meyer gets a season-ending injury or something. Then I could see Arnaud going in. Provided there's still three or four left in the season of course.

So....if playing Arnaud this year gets you an extra win when Meyer can't finish a game is it worth it? Does it take two games? What is the threshold of wins you would sacrifice to redshirt him?

I think you redshirt him no matter what and play with Van Winkle or whoever ends the next in line. It probably does depend on the situation though.

Just out of thought....Whats up with this Phillips Bates guy and why doesn't anyone talk about him at QB? Or is he going to be considered an Athlete and play Special teams/CB/SS etc....?? He looks an awesome pickup.

You gotta love anyone with the name Van Winkle(VDub). :D He would be a decent fill in for a game. But he probably isnt consistant enough for us to win over 2-3 games.

Phillip Bates is coming to ISU to be a QB. From what I have heard and from the highlight reels I have seen Bates will be the most mobile QB we have seen since Seneca. That is why I would not be surprised to see Arnaud as #2 on the depth chart this year. If they do not RS Arnaud this year, when Meyer leaves ISU Arnaud will be a Junior with a RS year remaining and Bates will likely be a RS Freshamn. That is one of the more logical scenarious that I can come up with, but having too many good QB's is always a good problem to have!

Its a good problem until they leave. The Arizona State situation is an example. Both those QBs could start at pretty much any school in the country. Also remember that Bates signed with ISU knowing Arnaud had already signed and what his accolades were. Hopefully he intends on being at ISU through thick or thin.

Good question...I say it depends on our record at the time of Meyer's injury. If we're late in the season with a great record, I say play Arnaud to maximize your season's outcome. If it's early in the year or our record isn't that good, you definitely play Van Winkle & start Arnaud with a clean 4-yr slate.

If Bates is better than Arnaud, I say you move Arnaud up to #2 this year & play him if needed. Sorry Van Winkle, but with Bates & Arnaud...you're the odd man out. At least you got a free degree from ISU.

Completely depends on the situation. Van Winkle has proven to be and effective backup and I would hate to lose a year for Arnaud or Bates. However, if the worst happens, one of those two would probably have to have the shirt pulled.

If Arnaud is not redshirted and Bates is redshirted then that means Arnaud is starting QB for junior-senior year and Bates is quarterback for his junior-senior year. But if Meyer and Arnaud do really well and jump to the pros:D
