If you are under a certain age and in college isn't your stuff covered under your parents homeowners?
A storm fried a computer I had in college when I was a senior and State Farm let me get any computer up to $2500 I wanted minus a deductible.

Hum, it's possible. looking into for 2 minutes, looks like some policies extend to college age children, but this site, How does my child going to college affect my insurance? , implies that off campus housing requires separate coverage.

I never even looked into it, as I'm a completely independent student, I doubt I would be covered for anything like that. By the way, paying for your own health insurance in your 20's is rough.

I think the age thing depends on company... I'm 25 and in college again my parents homeowners covers me for renters insurance...I make sure of it every time I get a new apartment.

age is not the issue. to be covered under an existing policy you need to have a rider. i work in des moines and have a home in coralville. my home owners policy covers my apartment here with a rider. same coverage limits on personal property and liability just no structure insurance

You don't have to be a firefighter to tell someone this is bad:

A two year old could tell me that is bad.

Thanks for posting the picture, I was one of the firefighters there. I was looking for some other pictures, could you please email me any other pictures from the event? The fire was one of the first times we have used the Compressed Air Foam System on our new engine and it would be great to have some action shots to pass on to the rest Fire Department.

Thanks...

I have renter's insurance through my parent's homeowners insurance. It costs only $25 per year, and, in my opinion, it's totally worth it.

For example, a buddy of mine that went to another school had the majority of his stuff ruined in his apartment because some jackholes next-door decided to fry a frozen turkey inside. It was pretty straightforward for him to file the claim and get new stuff.

Or, you never know if your neighbors will leave their heat off during winter break and have the pipes freeze, given the harshness of Iowa winters and the relative lack of insulation in some of these buildings.

The important thing, though, is to try to have some photographic proof in order to inventory the things that you own. Just take a few pictures of the contents of your apartment (couch, TV, surround sound, garage/car etc.) and keep them on a thumb drive. This makes it much easier to get money quickly.

Yeah, genius right? Oh the things that drunk college kids will do. He could've gotten a settlement in court due to their negligence, but the insurance saves having to deal with lawyers and excessive paperwork, et cetera.
