ABC 5: Hoiberg - Done Deal

I'll honestly never get the whole "I'm better than you because I had blind faith in Hoiberg from before the beginning" posts.

So Hoiberg has been as good or better than some of us hoped initially. Great - we're all better for it - and it makes those that continue to bring this up 3 years later first class dooshes because they can't seem to live a happy life without receiving that continuous pat on the back over it.

Its just cause you were one of those embarrassed, isnt it?

I love looking at old threads as much as the next guy but I don't think you can blame anyone for having doubts about this hire when it happened. Some people went overboard with their reactions but I bet everyone of those people love being wrong, unless your name is MontyBurns. I know I do.

Day 1 I didn't like it, by day 3 I had warmed up to it. To me it's one of those "OMG, who the hell ******* cares?" type of things. If your life is defined by the fact that you had blind faith in Hoiberg before everyone else, well, you might need to recheck your priorities in life. And the fact 3 years later those people have to keep burying people's faces in that **** makes them total arsehats.

I was nervous when the hire was made. I thought it was worth the chance though. If it hadn't worked out JP would have to fire an ISU legend though and that would be scary, and also possibly the end of JP as well.

We all have had crazy talk moments. It's good to be able to laugh about it. It's always a roll of the dice and fortunately we got a winner right now in Fred. His disposition and insights into the game are exceptional. OK, everybody go dig up old threads were guys were making crazy talk comments..

Hoiberg always succeeds. He's the kind of guy that just creates success everywhere he goes.
If this is true, he'll win. He knows the Magic here. He can tell recruits stories that will make them think Ames is a serious place.
He knows the fans, so he can sell tickets like crazy. Think that our sleeping giant wouldn't go completely nuts to see the Mayor lead us back to the tournament?

Major kudos to you!

Alarson, you suck.

This is absolutely an all or nothing hire. If he comes in an succeeds, he will stay for life and build a dynasty. If he comes in and loses, then JP gets to fire one of the most loved Clones of all time, and JP leaves with him. Cyclone nation totally implodes.

The lack of coaching experience scares the crap out of me, but I guess I'm not the one with my balls on the line here. It does seem to be an odd choice if the quotes from Thompson were true. It sounded like we had some very experience, successful coaches interested.

Well, here's to a return of the magic! Please let this work out, I miss Cyclone basketball.

Looks like my initial thoughts are still on track. Hopefully we continue down the dynasty path instead of ending it on the other possibility.

Glad we didn't hire Gillispie. Don't even want to think about where our program would be right now had that happened

How can everyone not be pumped about this? How does he sell the program to recruits? Well, he is a top scout(or maybe an assistant Gm in the NBA) and could sell his knowledge of knowing everyone in the NBA that he can get them a shot at the next level. This is a great hire if true. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clueless. Top tier recruits would come here knowing that Hoiberg can give them a huge upperhand at getting to the next level. Not only that, but he played double digit years in the NBA and has played with or against some of the greatest to ever play the game so he knows what it will take to coach these kids up.

Xbox nailed it

Right now, this seems absolutely insane, but for all we know Hoiberg could be an excellent coach (best case scenario). It could also be a colossal failure. This is extremely high risk/high reward. I think all we can do right now is support the hire and hope that The Mayor can bring Hilton Magic back, because if it does work out, we may someday look back on this as the beginning of something great.
Good call, self.

Awesome thread.

T'was interesting to see some of the same doubters we have today were the same way back then. I'm just happy that we've got posters on this site like Erik and ianoconnor whose first reaction isn't to second-guess every decision.
