ABC 5: Hoiberg - Done Deal

What is it with this site and hatred against anyone younger than 30? My brain works just as well as the next guy's and I'm only 23.

I think it's more of a practical basketball outlook that is driving people to question this hire. What makes Hoiberg stand out from any other candidate? All he brings to the table is great playing abilities and a love for the school. If that's all you need, then why not hire Fizer or Tinsley? When Gary Thompson has said that there are several coaches out there with experience at coaching teams to the NCAA tourney, it just seems like a bad decision to hire someone who has never coached a game in his life within such a short time frame. If you were looking to hire a great lawyer for your company, you wouldn't turn down reputed law firms and instead hire the plaintiff who has won a few high profile cases. At least, at my company we wouldn't do that.

I think it's a bad hire. If he comes in and does well then great, I'll be proven wrong. I hope I am, but I just cannot imagine this going well.

What makes Brad Stevens so great? Was it that he worked for Lickliter? Did he coach a game before being head coach? You could say he worked on the bench, but so has Fred. Fred has done that at every level. He is smart, he is organized, he is well respected, he knows how to deal with egos, he knows basketball. I'm pretty sure TJ knows recruiting and he will have others that know how to use a whiteboard. It may not work, but ****, it is what it is! Who cares in three or four years if you were right today?

This is absolutely an all or nothing hire. If he comes in an succeeds, he will stay for life and build a dynasty. If he comes in and loses, then JP gets to fire one of the most loved Clones of all time, and JP leaves with him. Cyclone nation totally implodes.

The lack of coaching experience scares the crap out of me, but I guess I'm not the one with my balls on the line here. It does seem to be an odd choice if the quotes from Thompson were true. It sounded like we had some very experience, successful coaches interested.

Well, here's to a return of the magic! Please let this work out, I miss Cyclone basketball.

All of you guys bashing Fred Hoiberg should not call yourselves Cyclone fans. Anyone who is a real ISU fan loves this hire and is extremely excited over it. Freddy will be successful here no doubt.

And you guys are crazy for wanting BG. Yeah, lets have another drunk lead our kids and be the face of our program. Good coach, but not a chance in hell JP would do this.

Welcome home Freddy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just got the news and can't stop smiling! I so pumped for ISU basketball again!

The way I see it, no matter who the hire was there would be something people didn't like. No hire is perfect. I am excited to give Freddie a chance. I have thought in the past Freddie was just one of those guys that would be successful in whatever he chose to do. So I am not too worried.

Love the fact ISU has an AD with the balls to pull the trigger on something like this. He might be right, might be wrong, but like the attitude he has.

Disappointing. I'd rate this hire at about a 3 out of 10 on the surface. Better than 1 out of 10 we had but, wow, we could have done better.

I think a lot of people said this about Paul Rhoads. IMO, this is a Rhoads type hire. Hometown kid that as of right now, looks like a bit of a gamble. Lets hope it works out similar to Coach Rhoads.

HOLY ****!

Major mixed feelings on this one.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I would LOVE this idea if he had ever coached a game in his life. I pray this goes well for everyone, because I would hate to see "The Mayor"'s status ruined.

wow! what a crazy thing to log in and see! i think this can work nicely if he surrounds himself with the right staff combination of x/o's coaches and recruiters. JP swinging for the fences here - it is exciting, but scary at the same time! I'm in 100% though!

THIS! Great post!

Loved this post. Enjoyed the style of basketball that Orrs teams played and we will see more of that. No more lets hope to score 50 . Welcome back and good luck Freddy

I love this hire but am worried for Fred. This fan base is wanting one things....more CPR. This is why JP went for Fred. (hometown boy that will be a good leader) CPR could be Fred's worst enemy. Since CPR had such good success in his first year, I am worried we might expect that from a similar style(hometown, leader) in Fred. I love the hire but am worried we will expect the same kind of success. I know it isn't exactly the same situation but we should just be looking for any kind of improvement in the players during the next season and not looking at the win/loss column.

The fortunate thing is, Hoiberg will get a "redshirt year" as head coach. We'd be AWFUL this coming season even if we hired Phil Jackson as head coach. No pressures this year, in other words.

Don't worry. Pretty sure CPR will come back down to earth(at least the record will be) this year.

Walters made a good point. Would you rather cast your lot with someone like Brian Gregory or Freddie? I will take Freddie.

Maybe I'm too old, but I just immediately thought of a former ISU athlete that was very very successfull in college and was given a chance at head coaching with no experience and did alright....

Who did I think of?

Dan Gable.

Okay, my brain lives on kool-aid and the similarities aren't really that similar. Basketball is not wrestling and Dan was stellar well beyond Freddie's successes

But who knows???? It's just an opinion board and I just shared a different one than anyone else in 17 pages of comments, so there.
