ABC 5: Hoiberg - Done Deal

Alright lets go Freddie!

Crazy fact: JP has conducted two men's basketball coaching searches in 3 days total.

You don't know that this hasn't been going on since Saturday when he knew GMac was conceivably out the door if he was interviewing elsewhere...

Im ecstatic. Tear him to pieces if he is bad after this season. Not yet though, give him a chance.

No one should be that quick to judge, like every coach he should be given 4 years to make his mark(barring some sort of absolute scandal). His first season he doesn't have a ton to work with yet.

That said, this pick makes me extremely apprehensive. To me, why move this fast, gauge other interest out there and then make a choice. If Hoiberg is still the best option in Pollard's opinion then pull the trigger but its not as if he wouldn't still be available after another week.

SHOCKED, I think JP has decided after Chiz and Mac that hiring a coach is a waste of time, hire a leader!! Welcome home Fred.

Succeeding in a Major BCS bb conference is more about getting the talent and managing the egos these days than it is X's and O's. Fred has dealt with that aspect at the NBA level for some time now. I say Great hire.

And the announcer says "Heeeerrrrrreeeee's Freddy!!!" Bring back Hilton Magic Mr. Hoiberg!

wow....i'm liking this right now. talk about family. We are a cyclone family and this looks like a strong selling point to me. What kind of system would he run? Nurse will be a heck of a coach. I don't know about recruiting though. I don't feel like that is really solved (if otz, grayer, and nurse are the assistants)

If you're against Hoiberg, you're against ISU. Step up and support JP and Hoiberg and ISU, or go back to your Hawkeye holes. It is ridiulous the idiots that are on here. Seriously. And so MANY idiots! It's not just the same few.

I can't even articulate how moronic and self-serving it is to post such drivel and such anger. I'll wager not one of those that are angry about this supports ISU athletics with their wallet, or is more than a couple of years out of high school or colllege. That's what should be so comical about it, but instead is just appalling.

If Hoiberg succeeds we have our men's BB team solidified for 25 years, unlike most all the other applicants. And the PO'd geniuses have NO clue who actually was interested, that's the best part. That's what interviews are for -something they will find out when they get to go out into the real world. Hoiberg was the best applicant based on his interview, not sure what's so hard to figure out. Either he had a fantastic interview, or the other applicants weren't as great as y'all thought.

Go Cyclones, I'm anxious to see what the next chapter brings.

What is it with this site and hatred against anyone younger than 30? My brain works just as well as the next guy's and I'm only 23.

I think it's more of a practical basketball outlook that is driving people to question this hire. What makes Hoiberg stand out from any other candidate? All he brings to the table is great playing abilities and a love for the school. If that's all you need, then why not hire Fizer or Tinsley? When Gary Thompson has said that there are several coaches out there with experience at coaching teams to the NCAA tourney, it just seems like a bad decision to hire someone who has never coached a game in his life within such a short time frame. If you were looking to hire a great lawyer for your company, you wouldn't turn down reputed law firms and instead hire the plaintiff who has won a few high profile cases. At least, at my company we wouldn't do that.

I think it's a bad hire. If he comes in and does well then great, I'll be proven wrong. I hope I am, but I just cannot imagine this going well.

VERY skeptical about this. All I can say is JP is putting his career on the line. People hated the fact that McDermott had no big conference experience, and JP goes and makes his successor someone that has no coaching experience whatsoever. If this thing works, JP has set up ISU basketball maybe for the next 25 years or more. If it fails, not only will we have wasted at least the next 3-5 years, likely more than that, but JP will have singlehandedly destroyed not only one of ISU's greatest legends, but one of Ames' favorite sons. I'll give this a fair chance, but I really don't like it, especially when apparently ISU had coaches wanting to come here.

JP just put his job on the line. If this gamble to put butts in seats fails, JP's done IMO

Definitely going to be harder for those who make a hobby of hating on ISU coaches to keep up their act.

Wow! The Mayor prowling Hilton next season! I have goosebumps! I won't lie, a day ago I was a little concerned about the lack of college coaching experience when Fred's name came up, but it took all of a very split second for me to jump on board enthusiastically! Love the hire! Will be renewing my season tickets and am looking forward to football AND basketball seasons! (Apologies for all of the "!" - fired up!!!! :-)

too bad for us he worked so fast ...

HCTMF Hoiberg is a slam dunk.

yep, I agree as well. He appears to be going "all in" on this one.

Done with ISU basketball. Bye

How could you say you're done? Because you don't agree on a hire? How can you not root for somebody like Hoiberg? It may not have been the best option to go with, but I like it better than having a coach like Gillespie come in for a couple years and then bail. Fred Hoiberg was a great player and was loved by Cyclone Nation. To not root for Hoiberg is not being an Iowa State Cyclone fan.

I personally cannot wait to see what he does for his coaching staff and which players return/stay committed to the program. I hope every one of them stay, and I can't see why they wouldn't want to. He has an amazing track record at Iowa State, and why not learn from somebody who's already done it. I'm just hoping that he'll be able to coach what he knows and get good recruits coming to Ames. I say let the Hoiberg Era begin!

So because he has never been a head coach before, he has no idea how to win at the town he grew up in, played college hoops there, played in the NBA, worked in the NBA, has no idea how to run a basketball program?

GET REAL.

This is a ballsy hire yes. The guy is an Iowa Stater to the core. But stop complaining and let the results speak for itself as all of you were saying about McDermott. Sometimes I wonder if this place is Cyclone Psychotic.

And all Fred ever did was succeed about any place he went. I could care less if he's coached before.

I'll remember that. I'll make a point to chastize you every time you decide to talk about Iowa State basketball.

DOn't worry, he'll be back if we atart winning. He is a joke anyway. I doubt many people base much off his comments.
