I don't get all the hate about niche sports.

Shooting certainly isn't. It has real world applications and definitely requires skill.

Badminton and Table Tennis are as legit as tennis or volleyball. It takes some endurance. And it takes incredible hand eye coordination.

And what is the argument against rowing and canoeing?

I don’t hate them but are you being serious?

I agree kayaking can be incredibly demanding but all sports just aren’t equally demanding.

I don't think its that much hate, but more of China winning the all these Golds but not winning much or any of the high visibility contests.

Kind of like if Iowa beat ISU in Football, Mens and Womens basketball, golf, softball, wrestling, but we were bragging about finishing higher in the directors cup or something.

Not sure if it was all of these sports but this kind of thing has definitely happened.

It is something when you give the elder stateswoman of basketball a spot on the roster for history’s sake (over several very deserving WNBA rookies) and by the gold medal game she’s lost her starting spot and doesn’t even get into the game

I’m just starting to become a wnba fan and not really watching Turasi as much as Wilson and Stewart so no idea if she has looked washed up before selection.

That said, nearly 40 LeBron was usa’s best defender and probably third best offensive player. They lose some of those tune up games without him and they lose to Serbia without having him face guarding Jokic second half. I’d rank him like 15th all players and 10th American players heading into this nba season but he was probably mvp for this gold.

It’s this and the US/west/democratic Asia/latin am put resources into what is widely participated and popular as opposed to looking at the medal count as a strategy battle map with different level opportunity targets the way a Chinese gov can and does.

So it's based on the most demanding? That eliminates basketball, swimming and most of track & field.

High visibility probably is also probably affected by where you live, something like Table Tennis is wildly popular in China, track & field probably less so.

25% of the Olympics and world sport is not table tennis and shooting as China’s medal count suggests. Can we agree there?

Feels like China benefited more in the Gold medal count by not having Russia competing than the US did going off last Olympics medals. China and Russia are both excellent in the niche sports.

Sure, so just talk up the track and field and swimming medals and be proud of that. NBC has been touring the track and field gold medals a ton. No need to put down the other events.
