2019-2020 NFL coaching carousel

Cowboys fans are going to be so pissed. They should have done everything in their power to hire Lincoln Riley.

Next, what do the Cowboys do with Dak? Although he did win one Super Bowl, McCarthy underperformed with Rodgers at QB. Do you trust him to succeed with Dak?

It's not a terrible hire, but it's also not exactly exciting, if you're a cowboy fan. McCarthy has never had to be a head coach without a HOF QB on the roster. That covered up a lot of deficiencies. But, how many of those deficiencies were his fault, and how many were on Ted Thompson?

This feels like a B/B+ hire to me. He's not bad, but he's not all that dynamic either.

Rams are not bringing back Wade Phillips as their DC. There's your scapegoat for the Rams failures this year. Can't tarnish pretty boy Sean McVay's name.

They'll regret that. The Rams had plenty of problems this year. Defense wasn't really anywhere close to the top of the list.

I'm by no means a Cowboys fan but I agree. It's a little astonishing that some people would of rather had an unproven guy lead the team vs McCarthy who has a Super Bowl ring and pretty good resume.

I think most people are more likely to think of Mike McCarthy the way he was his last couple years in Green Bay - clashing with the star QB and trotting out a stale offensive game plan. It's a what have you done for me lately league, and that Packers Super Bowl win was a long time ago. But the end of his run in Green Bay is still pretty recent.

You make a good point about college coaches with no NFL experience being unproven. More often than not the college coaches making the leap end up flaming out. But then again, an experienced coach with a Super Bowl ring is no sure bet either. Brian Billick has a Super Bowl ring and after he was done in Baltimore he never got another shot. Jon Gruden has one and he's hilariously overrated.

Every other team with a vacancy loves this hire, sounds like the only other person interviewed was Marvin Lewis. Really weird those two were his top options.

Less we forget about the "Rooney Rule".

" The Rooney Rule is a National Football League policy that requires league teams to interview ethnic-minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs."

I see it get thrown out a lot that McCarthy has always having a hall of fame quarterback to work with, so that diminishes the success he's had as a coach. Do people use that same criteria when discussing Belichick, Tomlin, Sean Payton? Those three are seen as top tier coaches. Why not McCarthy? He's been as successful as Payton. They were both hired the same year, Payton has a slightly better overall winning % at .635 compared to McCarthy's .618. McCarthy has more playoff wins with 10 compared to Payton's 7 and they both have a single Super Bowl. Green Bay missed the playoffs 4 times under McCarthy, New Orleans has missed the playoffs 5 times under Payton. 6 division titles for McCarthy, 4 for Payton in the same time frame.

If the Cowboys hired Payton, it would be seen as a great hire. Having said that, I understand that McCarthy did get fired, and the last couple years in Green Bay and he didn't seem to get along with Rodgers at the end.
