We are 38 days away until Iowa State kicks off the season against Kansas State in Ireland. To keep getting you prepared for the season, we will continue with out position previews every weekday through July 25. Next up is a group with a blend of experience and unknowns; the wide receivers.

1) Chase Sowell is the most exciting WR i'm looking forward to watching this year. Down the field threat, tall receiver who has wheels
2) Brett Eskildsen is the most interesting WR to me to watch - he could be our move the chains reliable 3rd down WR. (the Deshaunte Jones type WR)
3) Xavier Townsend to me is a must start player. I think he has a good rapport and history with Rocco and has game breaking speed.

I'm interested if they give Abu Sama a shot at slot wide receiver and decide to use him in the way the 49ers used Debo Samuel. Abu Sama could be effective in reverses, end arounds, and short passes to get yards after the catch. To me he's not a good RB and RB needs to be fully stationed by Carson Hansen and Ryver Peppers.

That’s an intriguing thought. Maybe his tendency to run east-west could pay off more often in the open field. It hurt us far too often last year as an RB.

IIRC, didn’t we see Abu in a few spots last year in slot and he got a couple quick passes out to him? Possibly toward the end of the year?

I think that the X factor is Jackson. He was slated to start last year before getting injured and they spent all season searching for WR3 once he was out. Is he back to that level at this point? We could see a step forward for Eskildsen, Overby or Green. And, I wouldn't rule out Robinson playing if he's ready. That said, I 100% believe that the TE room is going to get more catches this year and we'll see a lot more 12 and 13 personnel that we did last year.
