I read that several farmers’ markets are opening tomorrow, and it made me think about some of the hippie things I personally have done over the years.

What is the thing you do/have done in the past that others may think is “hippie” activity? Why did you actually do it? Do you collect rainwater or compost? Do you grow your own produce?

I would get organic fruits and vegetables, clean/steam/puree/freeze them, and make all of our kids’ baby food. I just liked knowing what they were eating - but then I would turn around and let them eat Gerbers Puffs, so a healthy amount of the wind was taken out of those sails.

What are yours? I am tired today, I apologize if this is a crappy topic

Bought a composter last year and have been keeping it full since. I've yet to actually get anything I can put into my garden, but I'm getting close. We added 2 more garden beds this spring as well.

I'm a crazy recycler... Our bin is pretty much full every week (Thank God ASI picks up recycling in Waukee every week), but we also recycle as many plastic bags as we can, single use batteries go to Lowes for recycling, etc.

I went to Bonnaroo in 2006 when it still felt quasi-hippyish.

I used to wear sandals all of the time but then age starting beating me around and apparently that's bad for your hips, and back, and toes, and ankles, and knees.

Rode RAGBRAI multiple times before it became too commercialized. Don't get me wrong, I still like it. But back in the day when it was more grass roots based, it was awesome to go off the radar for a whole week.
Have you taken any of the optional gravel routes yet? I did all but two last year. I've never been so alone on RAGBRAI before. Hills + loose rock is a helluva challenge.

Come summer time, socks are a no go for me. Let them piggies breathe! Whatever the shoes I bought at the start of the school year usually get relegated to be my summer concert/festival shoes, so they can handle no socks.

I guess if you plant a vegetable garden in the summer that is somewhat hippy?

I am a stickler about putting anything that can be recycled in the recycle bin instead of the trash - not only is it eco-friendly but my wife generates a lot of unnecessary trash IMO and just throws everything in the trash regardless which irks me because then the trash bin is practically overflowing by trash day. So in our household it's 2 fold as the more we can put in the recycle bin the more legit trash that will fit in the trash bin.

Saw that someone previously mentioned Ragbrai.....

I rode SAGBRAI and Ragbrai 3 with some high school classmates.
One one of those treks, there was rider who rode with a very big marijuana plant...we all called him the "wild wood weed" man'" There was some song in those days about wild wood weed that was a big hit, but I cannot remember the artist.

Also biked to Okoboj

I recycle about every thing that I can recycle

Grew my curly hair long - looked like I had an afro.

I recycle and will randomly pick up trash in public
We'll hit the occasional farmer's market or roadside stand
I'll light incense when we're on our deck (partly to keep bugs away)
I'm barefoot outside a lot
I like a lot of the music from the Woodstock era

I grew my hair long and went to protests about the Vietnam War while I was at Iowa State. I smoked opiated hash and wandered around the arboretum talking to the trees because I thought they had faces and were the friends I was with.

My younger years included a phase with a lot of disc golf, hemp necklaces, cargo shorts and a Jeep Wrangler. Dabbled in the marijuana a bit during college.

I saw it mentioned earlier in this thread but trash is a big one for me. I put litterers as very bottom barrel type people. If there’s trash on the ground I’m generally picking it up and have gotten the kids in the same habit. Leave places better than you found them. If it can be recycled, it’s going in the recycling. If it’s hazardous waste, it’s going to the hazardous waste facility.

We’ve also got a gardening system going on with my wife’s family. They grow a lot of **** and I do quite a bit of the processing. We end up splitting most of it.

Also, I don’t know if it’s classified as hippy but just having a calm demeanor and being nice to people.

Well I grew up homeschooled on an organic farm so the list is long.

But currently - make our own tomato sauce, muffins, energy balls, pancakes, lots of frozen fruits/veggies,
Have a garden - getting expanded this year
Winter sow most of my flowers and started veggies this year
Take our compost to a neighbor
Moving to a meat and egg CSA
No-spray yard (neighbors probably love that)
Pollinator garden
Baby wore
Bit of co-sleeping (don't @ me)
Made my own baby purees for a while
Cloth diapered the first for a year
My stitching hobbies are probably granola adjacent

I'm sure there's stuff I've forgotten.

What is an energy ball? I’m thinking something similar to an 8 balll?
