Ah, you rang a memory bell in my thick skull.

An ABC television movie, starring Carol Burnett and Ned Beatyy, and titled Friendly Fire told this story. Wonder if it's available to stream. Geez, he was from LaPorte City, about 10 or so miles from Waterloo, my home town.

One of the things I remember vividly from television news coverage of the war was watching a reporter giving a report in an active fire zone when he suddenly grimaced and dropped below camera level. When he stood back up you could see his leg bleeding. I don't remember his exact words, but he closed with something along the lines of "and anyone who tells you journalists don't get shot is a damn liar."
Vietnam was the war that came into our living rooms.

I think I just read somewhere in recent days that more than 100 reporters were killed in the Vietnam War. Looked it up, one source says 63 were killed, another adds 135 photojournalists died from the French occupation in the 1950s to 1975.

As a vet, I felt the one thing that Nixon did that was good for the country, was pardon the people that went to Canada to avoid the draft. They left their education, family, and/or jobs to do what they believed was the right thing to do, thus they also sacrificed because of Vietnam. I did not feel the same for those that bribed their way out of the draft, of which I heard were many.

Nixon halted the draft calls, but wasn’t it Carter that pardoned them?
