$7-8K seems really low for an entire house. Granted, I'm in the Chicago area, but late in 2017 we replaced our siding. Our house is a little over 1600 SF and I didn't get one estimate for vinyl under $12K and that the low ones were with some pretty questionable companies. Most were closer to $15K.

I paid $12k to vinyl side my whole house 5 years ago in Urbandale, so that number from Angie's list seems low. However, the estimate for the small job does seem high too.

Unfortunately small home projects can get pricey because it might not be a full day job and not worth the contractors time when they can easily get a multi-day job doing a full house. So there is likely a premium being put on doing a small job. You might have better luck waiting until late in the season and get someone wanting to get one last job in, assuming this isn't a priority that needs to be done now.

I'd try and check with some independent contractors. They will probably be cheaper, but if course you have to be comfortable with them.

Did you consider doing it yourself? I did a 10x10 section on my house, j trim and all, and it wasn't that difficult. Probably the only thing I could have done better was cutting the j trim at the corners, but otherwise looked great when done. It was also the first time I had ever done vinyl siding.

We had our entire (nearly) 3000 ft² sided a few years back. I can't remember the exact total as we did windows and doors with it. But I feel like it was well north of 20K. Vinyl, and we had some decorative pieces like you mentioned. And this was tearing off the old, with new house wrap.

Do it yourself, siding is real easy. Just gotta get a level start. But, if you do screw uo, screw up on the first pieces, nobody looks down when looking at a house.

Your estimates seem really low. Our house was ~12K and that was like 10 years ago.

Several years ago when my college son was on spring break, I took a week off from work and he and I re-sided my house. I used fiber cement siding. It was a lot of work, but I saved a rediculous amount of money - probably around $25,000. It looks great.

We are getting new shingles no gutters or anything extra and the first bid is $15K. I was hoping for less but I think that is the going rate .

If you are talking about the high density polyurethane product that looks like brick or stone that is probably not a bad price. Comparing it to vinyl siding is apples to oranges. I did a 9 by 15 interior wall with the fake brick and materials alone were $2100 if I remember correctly. But it does look great and will last a long time. Here is the product I used.

Who quoted that? I’m going with Titan and it’s cheaper than that.

We are going to put some vinyl siding on *a portion* of our wood-sided house. We want to install the siding that looks like stone/brick on the front to give a different look than what we currently have, Total SF of our project is about 330 SF but it's broken up by garage door, corners, a chimney, etc.

When we got an estimate from a reputable, known contractor whom we trust it seemed pretty expensive compared to what "average cost of siding" results showed in google.

For example, on Angie's List, it said vinyl siding for an entire 2,200 SF house is about $7-8,000.

Our little area, with trim and edge pieces, including labor, would be about $6,500.

Does anyone have experience with this type of project?

Material can vary a lot. I haven't found those types of estimates to be dependable. They would have to be working with the exact stuff you want to use. I'd be surprised if you could have a whole home sided with any sort of quality material for under about 12K. That said, I'm also the guy who spends more on high quality stuff so my opinion may be skewed.

Not exactly sure.
Having my moms house sided for her. Well insulated so just putting siding over the top. Buying some medium grade level siding (some quite a bit cheaper, some way more expensive). She had a 1300 square foot house with attached 2 car garage. Will be roughly 4-5k when it’s done. I bought the product and hired a guy to instal. Nearly every contractor wouldn’t let me do this, found out why. Most were jacking up the materials cost and saying the lumberyard was gouging people. Saved about 2-3k doing this, but had to find a guy to install.

The smaller and more corners or bends, the more expensive it becomes. They like ranch houses where it isfull strips most of the way.

If you want to replace old shingles go with J.Bos Inc. The owner is Jeff Bos and he cuts out the middleman. I had 3 quotes and he was very competitive and cuts to the point. He told me that with shingles it is all about the weight of the shingle.

Find an independent contractor that will work by the hour and let you buy materials. I did that, then took a few days off work to help him and keep him moving along (I didn’t want to pay him to pick up scraps in the yard for an hour at the end of each day, etc).

I did high quality siding and all new trim on a 1,600 sq ft house for about $7,500 in 2015.

How many square?

That seems high unless you have a really large house with a lot of peaks and extra work. I’d shop around some.

This is just one man's opinion who has done many homes. If your house now has "real" wood siding..........then use real stone/brick. Natural and man-made just don't mix. Even the cultured stone(colored concrete) looks cheesy when paired with real cedar siding. There is just something about the natural real look. If put on correctly, it will last long after you are gone and will not fade, crack or warp. Like I said....just my opinion and I am certain many other who do this work will tell you I am nuts. And maybe I am. But you cannot beat the look or the value of the real stuff. You don't see vinyl products on seven plus figure homes. There's a reason.
