    Ankeny water ban

I think we're having two different valid discussions. One about long-term issues, and one about avoiding an immediate situation.

6% of daily capacity is 6% of daily capacity. The problem is, when they were running at 108% demand vs capacity last week, even magically wiping data centers completely out of existence and zeroed out their water usage, you would have still had demand over 100% of what they could produce below...

Nothing comes close to stressing production capacity like summer irrigation. https://www.ciww.gov/news-1/updated-june-18%2C-2025---stage-iii-water-shortage-plan%3A-frequently-asked-questions Q: Are data centers being asked to reduce water usage? A: No. Records show that data centers use 2-6%...

The issue with the Raccoon gauge is because of how the water mixes from the north and south Raccoon that occurs just upstream. Not fully mixed yet, so it consistently reads low vs Fleur test.

You guys looked. The last time someone looked, somebody broke an arm the next day. Tomorrow's biblical catastrophe is on all of you know.

The moderate risk area then, and where it was left today was at the top end for tornadoes. One click more and it would have been high, and with 2 days to go, not a stretch. But that sword cuts the other way too if things don't eventually line up. (Area could grow, or shrink, or have one part...

(Quiet voice) All along in this thread the local NWS has been pretty clear that it was going to be pretty iffy (conditional) in Iowa, regardless of what some of the sexy AI stuff was cranking out.

If you forecast a 30% chance of rain one day, and it rains, was the forecast right or wrong? What if it didn't rain? Say a political pollster forecasts candidate Ronald Trunk has a 33% to win the election, and Trillary Plinton has a 67% chance to win. Ronald ends up winning. Was the forecast...

As Dr. Gallus always said in our meteorology classes, we don't often get drylines in Iowa, but when we do, they tend to be big tornado days. That applies to day obviously, but again kind of going back to what I said earlier about positioning, the convergence/trigger on the dryline is the big Q.

Yeah, it's a very hard problem. Back in the day when I started it was just Slight/Mod/High, and it was decided that was too course of a scale. Now with five levels it feels like more detail, but you still have the dilemma of coverage/number of storms vs. intensity. How do you quantify the...

There are ingredients there conceptually, but based on my experience forecasting this area over the last 20 years, we're (DSM and probably Ames) aren't in what I would highlight as the best position relative to the low. Not saying things can't or won't happen, but based on some local pattern...
