Just finished watching "Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary."

I don't have a lengthy review, but I recommend it for anyone who is into pop music history, even if you think you "don't really like" that style of music (or are afraid to admit you do kinda like it).

It's insightful to get insight directly from McDonald and Loggins, among others, how they view it.

Some crazy insights in the documentary. I think it was one of the TOTO guys that said collectively they played on like 5000 tracks of other artists was mind-blowing. What a way to make a living.

In this modern world one thing I hold on to is that there is music out there that I will never find that I would love, no matter how many hours I spend listening.

Toto and the members were prolific!

Never realized how many albums members of Toto played on. Though I knew the guys in band were made up of studio musicians

Also they did not want to put their only #1 hit on the album
Finally agreed to put it as last song on side 2.

Weezer did do a great cover

I go through phases where I get real deep down the Yacht Rock wormhole. Seems like whenever I hear "Give Me the Night" by George Benson, I get sucked back in. SXM had an awesome Yacht Rock station they pulled for some reason. Man, that would always put me in a good mood heading into work.

Is that not "The Bridge"??? - I still see it available?

Some friends took us to see Yacht Rock Revue in Denver last year and now we are hooked. We're seeing them three more times this year. Not only is great music and a great band, but it's a great party! Anyway, I decided rather than dressing up like a captain like everyone else does, I'm going as Spaulding from Caddyshack at Smails's yacht club party. Just had this shirt printed up. I've got the whole rest of his getup as well. Bermuda shorts, long socks, boat shoes and bucket

We hired yacht rock revue to play our wedding in Austin in 2018. People still talk abt how fun they were. All our guests wore captains hats and aviators! Good times!

They are huge now. They sell out small-mid venues. They're playing Fiddler's Green in Denver Memorial Day weekend, which is an 18,000 seat outdoor venue. (They probably won't sell it out, but still...)

Yeah, we were lucky to get them, they were still pretty pricey even 7 yrs ago.

What a great, if soul-crushing way to consider the vastness of music.

I'm at an age where songs I was familiar with hit me in a completely different way as I gain experiences. Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here was a okay song most of my life, but as I'm learning to play it on guitar there are so many layers and unique elements. Same words, different song to me.

I was just watching a video about the most successful yacht rock singer that no one has ever heard of, even though you've heard a lot of his songs. He was featured on the Professor of Rock, I believe. He had 8 hits in the 70s and 80s, but I'd never heard of him before I watched that video, probably because he didn't like touring and rarely performed anywhere but in the studio.

Some of you may have heard of Paul Davis, but he was new to me, even though I know a lot of his songs. According to the video I watched, he was more of a songwriter and preferred that to actually performing, but he had a voice for singing yacht rock, which wasn't called that back then.

Some of his hits included Cool Night, I Go Crazy, Sweet Life and 65 Love Affair. He also crossed over into country and had two hits as a guest vocalist on songs by Marie Osmond and Tanya Tucker. His biggest hit, country or rock, reaching No. 4 in the U.S. in the adult contemporary category, was Ride 'Em Cowboy, which I'd never heard of before.
We love to listen to Paul Davis. "C'mon over tonight- if it don't feel right you can go." I love watching the young folks "hearing songs for the first time."

It's back now, but IMO it's leaning more into soft rock than Yacht Rock this iteration. Give me some more Steely Dan, LRB, George Benson.
