'People are flat-out slobs': Jamie Pollard

It's a crazy hill to piss off the fan base, people want to drink and will pay to do so. In the new Cytown plaza you can bet they will be selling alcohol, but they cannot set up stands around the stadium to do the same like WV, Texas and other stadiums do, not counting EIU and UNI. There is plenty of space to sell other items around the stadium, but we cannot do the same for beer. Guess I will continue to bring in my flask of rum into the stadium like I do now.

The reality is it's becoming easier each year to skip going to games in person. Ticket prices are up. Lines are longer. Games are more available than every on streaming. I just can't understand why you want to give people yet another reason to stay home.
I've heard this exact take for 20 years.

Honestly, it isn't necessarily right or wrong, but I think it just comes down to quality of product on the field and also to a lesser degree, the weather...

People only REALLY start caring about crowd congestion/lines/drunk people/prices increasing/etc. once the team isn't winning football games. People will put up with A LOT for an 8+ win football team year after year.

JP just better hope ISU keeps winning. Fans will quit ponying up if/once the 3-4 win seasons creep back up and rear their ugly heads again.

Those of you headed to KC in 2 weeks... gonna be in for some sticker shock at the P & L. Those beers are pricey!
$15 for a 32oz across from Tmobile at Power and light at the big outdoor patio.

He's right. One time I got tired of fishing in filth up at the Saylorville Spillway. Fishing sucked so I went home and got garbage bags. Spent the next 2 hours cleaning up the place and ended up with like 4 bags full.

I went back a week later and it was just as bad.
Even though I've never been there, thank you for trying.

What's the value of the Sukup end zone if everyone can get beer and the wait for most people is shorter than premium areas? End zone seats are already not the best seats in the house.
Climate controlled environment, better food, shorter lines, and the ability to hobnob.

(A bunch of stadiums sell beer...)

(Our fan base is passionate about sports, and wishes its stadium sold beer, like many, many other stadiums)

"I don't know why this is such a big deal!!!"

LOL, really!? You don't understand why Iowa State fans care about this and are passionate about this specific topic?
Passionate about beer? You need some different hobbies if beer gets you this fired up.

If you are that passionate about beer, join the Sukup.

Bar and food scenes would actually slow consumption which would be great. It also adds accountability to the server. It is disingenuous at best to not recognize ISU goes much further than most othed places do to accommodate tailgating.

Iowa State gives us PLENTY of avenues to partake on gameday. If you are incapable of putting down booze for a four hour game you have an alcohol problem.
I doubt I would buy many beers in the stadium but there are those incapable of putting down booze for a 4 hour game AND there are those who just want to have a drink during the game. Not everyone who wants in-stadium sales is a raging alcoholic. Some didn't have a chance to tailgate or didn't tailgate because of weather. Many others tailgate without getting drunk. I know we are getting old, but there is more overeating at our tailgate these days than over imbibing.

I go to MN United games and I generally will buy a beer each for the Mrs. and me. One only most games, but it is nice to be able to have a beer and enjoy the game.

This is dead on and what I think is so absurd about Jamie's statement. Will there be people that drink excessively if you offer beer in the stadium? Sure. But if your goal is to be ****faced watching the game, you're still going to get that done. You'll load up before the game, you'll smuggle in alcohol, you'll go out at halftime, etc.

In my opinion, most people just want to drink a beer or two during the game because it's part of the experience. I know when I go to pro sports events, I'll usually buy a maximum of two beers-- not because I need a beer, not because I want to get drunk, but because sitting outside watching sports and sipping on a beer is something I enjoy doing.

As someone who doesn’t drink, and generally brings a younger kid to the game, I would gladly trade people being able to buy beer in the stadium and not allow re-entry. I might actually email JP and ask why he thinks this way is better, because people have more of a chance to get sloppy drunk because of slamming beers at half than they do waiting 30 minutes in line for 1 beer in the stadium. I would be completely fine with that trade off if possible.

We have people next to us that leave at half time and never come back in. More room for us!

I haven't gone out at halftime in years. Granted it was a lot easier decades ago when we tailgated just south of the stadium and even when we were in the student lot.

Be that as it may, if they did get rid of re-entry I would hope that they would add some portajohns somewhere inside the perimeter, maybe just inside the gates where there is a little unused space. The halftime restroom lines aren't going to get any shorter if nobody is leaving the stadium at all.

Fans are already fickle that will not change regardless of whether we sell beer. I'm simply amazed at the amount of individuals that are willing to shell out $15 for a beer at a ballgame but refuse to donate $50 to the collective. They will spend $90 on 6 beers at a game and then cry out about their season tickets increasing $25. It's weird.

Would the same people who don’t want beer sales in the stadium to curb drunkenness support banning tailgating?

Because tailgating contributes to intoxication wayyyy more than in-stadium sales. And is arguably more dangerous due to zero regulation (staff cutting someone off if they’ve had too much) and proximity to cars and traffic.

Assuming they’d cut off sales at the end of the third quarter and individual could only consume what 4-5 bears max over the course of a 4-hours game.

No tailgate all you want. Tailgating doesn't affect me because I show up an hour before the game and go into the game to watch pregame warmups.

For the most part there aren't any drunkards in my section and I would like to keep it that way. Hell some of the non-drunks are annoying now, I can only imagine how annoying they'd be if they can sit there and drink during the game.
