'People are flat-out slobs': Jamie Pollard

I would not be a beer customer and agree with most of what JP is saying here. The only part of his talk that I didn’t agree with was the ‘much more complicated’ slant. Just explain the issues in detail, we’re capable of figuring out where he’s coming from.

The BOR carries a blanket policy for liquor to be sold on all three campuses. It's literally already being paid for.

He could sell beer stadium wide and it would have no effect on premium seating/clubs. There are way more reasons than just beer that is drawing people to those amenities.
Unless he is going to lose one of the ten largest donors by doing it. The alcohol sales wouldn’t necessarily offset the donor loss.

I just wish he would have waited till we beat Arizona on Saturday to call us slobs. I mean we are still dealing from the Okie State loss. We didn’t need it rubbed in

That's not bad either. I understand Jamie's stance for football but it's nice to go to a basketball game and have 1 or 2 beers. People aren't typically pregaming hours before

I totally agree with this. I think that the biggest problem with Hilton is that the concourses are too small to handle it. There was a plan to basically double the width, but that got shelved when the settlement went through as well as conference realignment and B10/SEC taking a chunk out of our playoff allotment. ISU's budget wasn't going to be what they planned on, so the construction project got scratched.

I do believe that once they get the Hilton project done, they will sell beer there...whether Pollard is still AD at that point or not. And the primary reason is that people aren't drinking a million beers prior to BB games. If you don't have to worry about it affecting the atmosphere, it becomes a much easier decision.

I have no idea why this is such a big deal, but it falls in the same dumb conversation of intro music, uniforms, JTS stadium seats need painted, etc. If you want to drink in JTS, you can damn near carry a case of beer into that stadium and not get caught. OR join the Sukup area and you can have as many beers as you would like.

Some of our fans need logoff and find some hobbies or something else to ***** about.
LOL a long time ago 2 of brought a case of beer in for the Iowa game. Top row of the balcony for that game we weren't going to get caught we shared with our neighbors

I don't know that comparing to other places is the best for booze sales. Most stadiums don't cater to the pregame crowd like ISU has. I don't believe for a split second people are going to pass on their 8th beer tailgating pregame to get it inside the stadium.

I think he could have chosen words more carefully but I agree with his sentiment. You have minimum 4 hours of drinking in the parking lots before any game. Some people just need to investigate treatment for alcoholism.

I'd also be totally fine with beer sales in Hilton if they ever had a way to make it feasible.

I'm not a huge supporter of calling the fans "slobs", but maybe I'm just old fashioned

What's the value of the Sukup end zone if everyone can get beer and the wait for most people is shorter than premium areas? End zone seats are already not the best seats in the house.

I would bet that if you polled Sukup ticket holders, the #1 reason for buying far and away is the climate control. Selling alcohol might be #2, but it would be pretty tight with stadium seats (vs benches) followed up by shorter lines for concessions/restrooms.

Would the same people who don’t want beer sales in the stadium to curb drunkenness support banning tailgating?

Because tailgating contributes to intoxication wayyyy more than in-stadium sales. And is arguably more dangerous due to zero regulation (staff cutting someone off if they’ve had too much) and proximity to cars and traffic.

Assuming they’d cut off sales at the end of the third quarter and individual could only consume what 4-5 bears max over the course of a 4-hours game.

2 things in your post here, IMHO, are beyond ridiculous.

Yes, of course Iowa State compares to other schools and stadiums. Lots of other schools and stadiums have really good tailgating and pregame fan support out in the parking lots and beyond. JFC. Hell, some stadiums/arenas are in the middle of a hopping bar/food/etc. scene.

To somehow generalize and equate “fans wanting to be able to purchase beer in a stadium at a sporting event, like they can already do at many other stadiums/arenas” to alcoholism - a disease that affects the lives of millions - is disingenuous or even naive at best and almost offensive at worst.

Bar and food scenes would actually slow consumption which would be great. It also adds accountability to the server. It is disingenuous at best to not recognize ISU goes much further than most othed places do to accommodate tailgating.

Iowa State gives us PLENTY of avenues to partake on gameday. If you are incapable of putting down booze for a four hour game you have an alcohol problem.

People would absolutely ***** about the lines. ******** about stupid **** is one of the things our fanbase does best.
That was kind of the point of my post….. apparently I failed again to lace enough sarcasm in it.

I just don’t understand the arrogance of JP here. Throw us a dang bone if you’re gonna jack up the costs to be a season ticket holder. You can easily look at data around the Midwest and price it out in a way that both makes sense for fans to buy 1-3 per game but not binge drink it.
