You said Campbell is overvalued.

I'm contending what he's done here is unprecedented.

You're arguing history is irrelevant because ISU has unprecedented facilities, support and recognition, yet that's *not* to Campbell's credit because he's overvalued?
His performance is overvalued by you, absolutely. Particularly jsb who is cliff diving without a parachute at the thought of CMC leaving. You have not been able to support your adornment without brining in irrelevant history.

He went 7-5 with a preseason top 10 team. Thats not incriminating based on how lowly you think of Iowa St based on a couple head coaches and ancient history. His record is only worth $7-$8 million if one thinks 7 wins at IowaSt is incredibly good. It’s not.

What he’s done is an improvement over DMac’s six year peak, as one would expect given the advantages he has. Unprecedented, but so is being this far removed from little ISC and decades of no support.

The same is true for Pollard. What he’s done is unprecedented as an AD at Iowa St, but it should be and doesn’t mean he’s doing a great job. There’s way more to work with, and he has little to do with it (growing alumni base, TV money, etc).

Yes, CMC gets little to modest credit for that. Those changes are generational types, due to more favorable demographics and due to DMac, Orr, etc. The great news is when CMC’s impact truly comes into play over the next decade, the growth will be even greater.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer but this thread will probably open back up in a month when Nagy gets fired
Not really sure what Coach Campbell's level of interest is with the Bears, tbh

More significantly, however, Ryan Day is connected to the Bears job which would open up OSU. Fickell would be first in line and I doubt he would turn it down, but certainly something to watch for.
Campbell is Browns or bust, baby.
Ok so it’s been said already, but we are all big Freeman fans going forward at Notre Dame.

We all kind of knew Notre Dame was one of the jobs Matt would absolutely leave for. Well if the reports from Jeremy are true that he would have taken if offered, we now know for sure. Not saying that will always be the case because a few years from now he could be rolling so good here at ISU it may become a Kirk Ferentz thing where he doesn’t want to or need to leave.
To summarize I was a little concerned that if the Penn State job opened (Franklin to USC), Campbell might have interest. When the ND job opened I truly thought that could be it for Campbell's run here at ISU. Those were the two jobs I was worried about, ND and PSU in that order. I could be wrong but I don't think Campbell is a good fit for 'the Ohio State'. He would be very good for them, just don't think Campbell wants to put up with the attitude of OSU and its current football elitism.

So if Ohio State opens up soon I will have concern yes because we just don't know what Matt thinks. I just think the worst of the coaching carousel circa 2021 is over.

One wonders though, atleast I do, how long it took before people stopped knocking on coach Bill Snyder's door? I don't think we'll have that kind of K-State coaching security but who knows.

I always thought Campbell would be the next Clemson head coach if Dani takes over at Alabama when Saban retires.
Hadn't ever thought about Clemson, whenever that job opens.

See you all here next year. This will probably be a yearly thing. We dodged a bullet though this year.

I want to make clear I am very happy Matt Campbell looks to be a Cyclone for longer. He’s a legend and so great for our university.

But I feel for the man. ND is a dream job and likely won’t open up any time soon. Happy for me, selfishly, but sad for him. He’s earned it.
I hear you.

At the same time, I think Campbell and staff should be jacked up about the future of ISU in this league.

Yes Cincinnatti is good, so is BYU, and yes so is Houston. But TX and OU are leaving. This league is wide open for us to return to form and compete for league titles, and soon. When the playoff gets 8 spots and it will, the winner of the Big 12 will get a seat at that dance.

Future of the program is very, very bright. Saw something from Greg Gaines today about how hes a month away from moving to Ames. He must be a winter enrollee. We have multiple 4 stars coming in. This staff is in a great position right now.

Right now, ND is in great shape. So that favors the internal canidate. Coach Campbell would be a change candidate. So the timing wasn't right this time around.

But...

The guy they picked doesn't have head coaching experience. So things Could go south in a hury. Very easily the position could be open again in 3 to 5 years. Then they will be looking for a change candidate.

Matt keeps grinding and improving things at ISU and he could still get the job.

If Matt Campbell is the man who we think he is, him not getting the ND job at this time won't be a downer or a "loss" for him. Hell, idk if anyone has ever heard that's his dream job. And if it is, if anything it will make him dig his heels in deeper to really create ISU football to what he wanted.

I know what you mean in your sentiment, but i doubt he is going to bed tonight pissed off or upset he didn't get that job.

I’m really glad Fickell is staying at Cincinnati. Having him in the new Big 12 would probably make our lives tougher, but he’d bring a sense of legitimacy to the league. Notre Dame hiring Freeman was the ideal outcome in my eyes.

Marcus Freeman is going to be a great HC. Matt Campbell has nothing to be sorry about for wanting the ND job. Legendary place. Knute Rockne. But Freeman was the best choice. The rest of the staff is staying. Notre Dame may have actually improved themselves. Brian Kelly is proving to be an ass. Total mercenary. That’s why no one is moving with him. They are staying with Freeman. And Notre Dame.

Hoping Freeman has a long successful run at Notre Dame. One less threat.

Campbell is not in as big of a demand as some fans think.
Funny how whenever a head coach position opens at a top P5 program and the national pundits immediately come out with a list, Campbell is on it. Funny how whenever an offensive coordinator job or a head coach position at any level comes up, Brian Ferentz is never mentioned. Fry had a legacy of turning assistants into head coaches at P5 schools. Ferentz………? The demand is for coaches that have exciting offenses that score points and can beat top programs (OU, UT, OSU). Winning by defense, turnovers, punting & “game management” does not get you on the hot coaches list.

Does this mean I have to root for ND now?

Yuck!

I guess that's the sacrifice I will make for the greater good.

FWIW, Brady Quinn just said on his Fox radio show this morning that ND never even talked to Campbell. Sounded like they zeroed in on Freeman from the beginning.

Campbell is a die-hard Browns fan.

Does that mean he wants to coach there though?

Like fans of programs also tend to hate how they're run. I'm a Bears fan, but if I had a good college job I wouldn't think about getting into that mess.

Except for punting those have been a large part of CMC's success and Ferentz was absolutely sought after for a long while until it became clear he wasn't leaving.

Winning and winning at historically bad programs gets you on hot lists.

Has Manning been on any lists?

Freeman seemed to be a hotter commodity right now than Campbell. You think with what he did with Cincinnati’s D and then doing the same with ND, that the ND admin was going to let him go with Kelly? Plus he’s lot like Campbell, he is a players coach and very passionate about what he does.
