Sports Page Ames

This is the west Ames restaurant. The sporting goods place of same name at the mall has been gone for a couple of years.

Ah, um, yeah... -_-

The Fort Dodge Sports Page (and the owner's original location) is fantastic. I was really excited when they opened the Ames location but the one time I went, I was underwhelmed compared to the Fort Dodge location. Each time I drove by there was hardly anyone at the Ames location.

The Fort Dodge location was our Friday night place to go nearly every week when we lived in Humboldt. We got to know the staff, and they knew us, and food was good and fairly inexpensive. We tried this Ames location twice and it was not at all the same. Bartender who kind of seemed like he wanted to be the boss (maybe he was, I don't know) wasn't funny when he thought he was. Food took a long time to be served and didn't always look like what we ordered.
Unless this location is really good and really special or unless/until there's more retail and dining places very near there, I think it will have a hard time drawing people. People generally don't just drive around the west Lincoln Way area looking for a place to eat.

Speaking of Wingstop.... Man do I wish Wing Zone in Urbandale was still open. A.) they delivered and B.) they had a wet nap that was the size of a beach towel by the time you got it unfolded.

I don't think Ames is over saturated with restaurants, its that there are so many $6-10 options. The list is endless on that. What I think Ames is missing is local, quality restaurants. I loved places like O'Malley's & Pazessco. Cafe, Dublin, Mucky, Spice, are good but a place like Centro would kill it.

The owner of the Sports Page in FD is a good buddy of mine, Joe Cain. The Page is my favorite place to eat here, hands down. Great food, good service, reasonable prices. (The only complaint I have is that unless you specifically ask, they will put Diet Coke in your BV & Coke - ugh. But otherwise, it's light years better than Applebees, and cheaper.

I'm bummed for Joe that the Ames location failed, I'm guessing it's probably more to do with the people that ran it for him more than anything else. And that's sad.
